When and if you follow the noise in search of the dinger - it is sometimes behind the instrument cluster, and at other times (like in my 01 F350) it was in the control module behind the dash frame under the instrument cluster. I never wanted to hear that thing again - so I pulled the module apart and pulled the soldered dinger off the circuit board - now I never hear a dinger when the door is open, when the key is in the ignition, when the seat belt is disconnected, or when I'm starting the truck. I love my new truck! But one has to be bold and persistent to get rid of the dinger at the source...........I would have followed these instructions listed above on disconnecting wires had I not got totally fed up with the dinger prior to joining this forum.
So a bump and a thanks. I just joined and found this thread...OMG thank you! I've been accepting the damned dinging for 14 years. Who would've thought that a "safety" feature could be disabled with instructions in the OM?
Anyway, thanks and I hope I find (and share my own) much other good stuff.
Many thanks for this thread. I drive my truck commercially and spend plenty of time in it every day with my seat belt off taking a mandatory break, eating, filling out paperwork and logbooks, or just resting for the night. The seat belt warning constantly dinging at me forever and ever regardless of whether the truck was in park, the parking brake was engaged, etc has really been wearing on my nerves. The deactivation sequence worked perfectly for me on the first try.
Will add my fixes to help someone down the road. 2000 550XLT 7.3
Had a bunch of dings I just blocked out for ten years before finally deciding to dig into the problem.
First problem- I would start the truck and then after 15-20 seconds a slow methodical ding, ding, ding, ding, ding - pause- 5 more-pause 5 more until I mentally blocked it out.
Cause- The audible chime is the back up warning to the airbag fault light. When the bulb burns out the audible chime kicks in.
Solution- Pull of dash and replace the bulb on the cluster-Easy. With the light operational it blinked the code 32 (if I remember correctly) Air bag clock spring.
Fix- Pull the steering wheel and replace the clock spring- Reading the repair was intimidating but like most things the job was easy less and 2 hours. Read the correct procedures and disconnect the batteries as a precaution.
Next up Ignition chime- As explained earlier insert a small punch or Allen wrench under the ignition. With the ignition in the run position press up on the little silver tab and pull out the ignition. snap off the metal clip for the key minder and replace no more chime.
Ive also got a backup beeper cancel button. It gets pretty annoying backing up with the tailgate down or backing up to the fiver.....Just punch it off and no more beep...
