03 Explorer, ABS/Cruise problem

Hello, I'm new to these forums. I have an 03 Explorer 4x4 4.0L V6 that I only had for 3 months now.

I have three problems that I'm trying to figure out, first problem is that my ABS light comes on, mainly when I quickly hit the gas while turning the wheel(such as passing a car). When I turn the truck off and back on, the light goes off, and stays off till the next time I pass a car or what ever.

Second problem is my cruise control, it sometimes works, and sometimes dosen't. I don't know why. One thing that I did notice is that if the cruise isn't working, it'll sometimes start working again after I bring the truck to a full stop.

Thrid problem is my gear shifter. After driving the truck for a few minutes, then try to put it into park, the shifter will stop in between 'P' and 'R' on the first try, I'll bring the shifter back towards 'R', and it'll go right in park on the second try with no problems. This only happends right after I drive my truck, any other time it goes into park just fine.

Thanks for any help
Ralph

Well, I took it to the dealer and they pull the codes off the ABS light. The dealer tried to track down the problem, but wasn't able to find any bad parts. I was told that it could of been a loose connection that they 'fixed' when they were tracking down the problem. I drove it around for a few hours, and so far the cruise works great, and no ABS light yet. yay! I have the code number and some info on this on the paper work from the dealer, I can post it if anyone else is having this problem.

Yes post the code #, you have me curious now!

That is sometimes the case... you get a loose pin or a connector not completely plugged in, and in the process of diagnostics you unplug the connector, runs some tests, then plug it back in (fully) and never do find the problem, but in the process it still got fixed. I've done that myself on a few occasions. It kind of sucks because you know there's a problem, but you can't find it.. makes you feel... well stupid! haha

Anyways I'm glad it's fixed, but still post the codes...

Hello Shaggszgn.

I have the same problem going to park from drive. Did the dealership give you an answer for that issue?

According to the paper work I got, they ran through a complete diagnosis sheets for code C1440, brake pressure transducer main primary signal fault.

sportfan, the dealer couldn't find anything wrong with the gear shifter. I know they noticed it, but they didn't see a problem with it.

I have a 2003 Limited and it always does it. I figured maybe it was a safety feature (not sure why). The first time I parked it I was getting out of the vehicle before I realized it was not all the way in park and was continuing to move. Now I just check each time to be sure. It will always go into park on the second try. Thank you for the quick response at least I am not the only one to notice this quirk.

Ford 2003 Explorer - abs fault C1440

Hello Shaggszgn,
We took our Ford Explorer for inspection and ended up getting all 4 tires replaced, as well as front and rear brakes. We never had any lights come on until we picked it up after having this done. We took it back and they put it on a computer which gave the fault C1440 Pressure Transducer/Main Primary. To our surprise, they said we had to take the vehicle to Ford and pay for them to find out the problem??!! They did tell us that if ford found that they were at fault for doing something wrong, that they would take care of the bill.

We are wondering if you know how to fix/repair the problem so we can take it back to where we got the brakes and tires put on and let them know what to do.? They said they had no idea what the fault was and how to fix it.

If anyone else thinks they can help, it is much appreciated. Thank you.

there is a tsb on the shifter.

TSB 04-22-12

11/15/04

GEAR SELECTOR LEVER - INCREASED EFFORT TO
SHIFT FROM DRIVE TO PARK

FORD:
2002-2005 Explorer

MERCURY:
2002-2005 Mountaineer

ISSUE

Some 2002-2005 Explorer 4dr/Mountaineer vehicles, may require a greater effort to move the gear selector lever (shift lever) from drive to park. This may be due to a time delay with the brake shift interlock (BSI) pin retraction.
