Egt Readings?

I just installed autometer ultralite pyro and boost gauges last friday and had some questions on my egt temp. I have the superchips flashpac tuner set on performance. My EGT reading can go as high as 1500 at WOT in a very short time but falls down to 600 as soon as you let of the throttle. I have heard that 1250 is the magic # to be safe. My question is what should I look for to be on the safe side as far as the EGT goes? The pyro is installed on the drivers side exhaust manifold at the bend on the back of the manifold. EDIT: Is it the peak temps or the sustained temps I need to worry about.

I wouldn't be concerned in the the least about a periodic 1500 degree flash-up; you can get ALOT hotter than that for short periods of time and suffer no damage. Anyone who tells you that 1500 in bursts will do damage hasn't melted a few down yet.

As far as sustained temperatures, that is somewhat hotter than should probably be run, as the engine oil temperature would begin to climb after ~30 seconds because the engine oil cooler most likely wouldn't keep up with the heat introduction from the pistons- but I don't see the FlashPaq ever sustaining that temperature for long, as those calibrations aren't tuned that hotly to begin with.

As Matt said, short bursts won't hurt. On the strip I peak around 1700-1800.I let her cool down good between runs though. I had a guy on here tell me he'd get me a better tune that would help me out, but I haven't see it yet.

You can cruise all day at 1250 and not hurt a thing, I have topped the 1600 pyro a few times...

Placing the pyrometer AT the bend might yield slightly higher egt readings than a placement in a striaght flow. A placement before or after would give you a more accurate reading. Someone else might have real world experience with this. Hopefully they will chime in.

The 6.0 can take some serious heat. Watch the water and oil temps. If either start to climb at a high rate or too high you will get in trouble. Short bursts of heat will likely never hurt you. Sustained heat, enough to increase egt, oil and h20 will kill you!!

Just my 2 cents.
