I've seen this kind of thing happen when someone asks what is the best motor oil to use is, but I did not think this was going to happen when I asked about PS fluid :-).
By flushing out all used or mixed fluids, and then refilling with Type F, this eliminates the Power steering system from having old or contanimated PS fluid.
Sure it take some time to flush, and bleed the Power Steering System, but steering components are expensive, and if not done right, then here you go again replacing unwanted parts.
You will be better off doing it right the first time around.
Transmission Fluid is a better grade of oil then 30 years ago.
The guy I bought my 78 from put a new plastic steering resivour on it and put in type f fluid. 1 week later the steering started growling and locking up. I drained it out and put in stp power steering fluid and not had any problems since. That has been a year ago now. I am putting power steering fluid in all mine now.
I would bet money you had a contamination of something and it left when you drained the TYPE F. I'd also bet if you now drained all the PS fluid and replaced with TYPE F you'd have no more issues than you do now.
