I rebuilt my 77 power steering pump and have totally drained the entire system and installed new PS hoses. The owners manual states that it should be filled with power steering fluid. Is one manufactures power steering fluid as good as anothers? I've ordered an inline magnetic power steering filter to install in the PS return line, but I don't think it will be a very clean looking install seeing how the distance from the power steering cooler fitting to the PS return fitting is only about 4 inches and I think the filter will be at least that long. Anyone ever hooked up one of these filters and have pictures of their installation?
I remember using type-f fluid as well, but the manual states PS fluid and not Type-F. Anyone else have any opinions on what fluid is best to use for my application?
I have always used tranny fluid with no ill effects. On Rusty as I got a leak and have to top it off twice a month I use 5W30 or 40 with no problems as It is just a hydraulic pump. If and when I overhaul it she will get type F.
I gave ya that advice too STP makes plain old PS fluid, and that's what I'll stick to with my '01
Yeah I saw that and that is probably how I will go as long as I can find it at my local autoparts stores. I was just wondering if using type-F fluid instead of PS fluid is better or worse. Anyone know how much fluid will be needed to fill my entire PS system including the cooler and the add on filter?
The Ford Plastic pump takes F type transmission/power steering fluid.
Bill will have a Ford number for it.
My PS pump and system are all metal except for the hoses of course, so are you recommending Type-F fluid for my application as well? I know that these Ford PS pumps can be noisey and I also wondered if one type of fluid may help to reduce the noise better than another.
I have used both in my 78 without problems. Now with my 98 windstar I used what the ford dealer said to use,Atf.My power steering pump was always a little noisy,But Atf made it worse. After driving a few hundred miles with Atf I flushed the system and switched to power steering fluid. And the pump was alot quieter.
The guy I bought my 78 from put a new plastic steering resivour on it and put in type f fluid. 1 week later the steering started growling and locking up. I drained it out and put in stp power steering fluid and not had any problems since. That has been a year ago now. I am putting power steering fluid in all mine now.
