Just looked under the hood to decide on the kwik filter or Tymar, and have PS fluid sprayed? on the airbox, engine cover etc. No hose leaks... appears to be blowing by the fill cap on the ps pump.... what causes this and is a new pump the only fix? Thanks.
It's not being over filled is it? There are 2 marks on the dip stick, the lower mark is for when the fluid is cool. Does it steer with ease? Is the breather hole in the cap plugged? If it's not that, then seems strange for this to happen unless it is a hose problem. I can't see how the pump would push fluid out the cap. Is there fluid on the back side of the pulley? This would indicate that the front seal is bad and the fluid is spread around by the air flow. I can't remember which direction the over pressure valve (in the pump) is pointed at and maybe it is spraying up to the cap???
Check the cap seal, if it appears bad just go to a "recycler" and get one from a newer year. Then clean everything up so you'll know if that did it.
Might not be the cure but it's the cheapest way to start.
Thanks... put a new cap on it 2 yrs ago when I lost the one that was on it... obviously didn't have that one locked down right. Not overfilled...didn't think about the breather hole...I'll check the seal.. steers okay... was just wondering if there was a check ball that could be sticking and maybe an easy fix to loosen it up w/out having to R/R the ps pump and hoses.
There should be a check ball inside the pump (I think for over-pressure). The pain is removing the pump (buy/borrow a good pulley puller/installer) and getting the housing off the pump. Once that is done, it's easy to overhaul/clean out the pump assembly.
