It only effects the opening of the gate. You still have to lift the gate and slam as hard as you wish . . .

You can pretty much still slam the tailgate shut like you would without it.

Although I haven't actually tried it. My tonneau cover interferes slightly, so I have to go up slow and then lift the tonneau cover to shut my tailgate, but the tailgate seems normal 'weight' raising it to me.

Got you covered! I received mine yesterday and it took all of about 15 minutes to install. Of all of the stuff I've installed I would have to say this was the easiest. Works great and does not interfere with the closing of the tailgate. You can slam it as hard as you need to.
