Has anyone ever had a fuel filter start leaking gas for no apparent reason? (98, 3.0, 171,900 miles) I had mine replaced 1,300 miles ago and it started leaking today. I crawled under it while it was running. The gas is leaking out of the front connection. My guess is one of the o-rings in the gas line connection has cracked. My question is can I buy o-rings separately or perhaps a new fitting, or do I have to get a whole new gas line from the filter to where ever the next connection is.
There is a repair kit for that fitting! it replaces the whole fitting, the garage near me has the tool so I kknow it's available. Check with your local repair shops or dealer.
Hey folks, It turned out to be bad filter. The flange on the outlet end was noticeably thinner when compared to another new filter. It allowed the filter to move in the fitting, thus allowing it to leak. If you held the filter tight against the o-ring it quit leaking but leaked again when I let go of it. I guess that I will be paying more attention to filters in the future.
The bad filter was purchased at Car Quest. I probably wont stop going to Car Quest, at least not yet, but I sure will be more watchful in the future. That particular filter may well have been made on a Monday morning and got by their quality control.
I have never found the right fuel filter for my truck at any aftermarket auto parts store. The only place that has the right one is the dealer, and they charge like $25 for it.
Jimw411, is your truck flex fuel capable? Napa flex fuel fuel filter #FIL3233, $13.19. Normal gas fuel filter #FIL3409, $23.69. Both at the NAPA on line store. Or you could take the Ford part number to your local NAPA store and they should be able to cross reference it to their filter.
