It's not a direct swap. The tail shaft housing is longer, the drive shaft won't be right. I don't believe the crossmember will line up at all. I'd look around for a good 3 speed if you don't like the 4 speed.
If the 4spd is good, why not keep it? Gears 2,3 & 4 are virtually identical ratios to the 3spd.
Also good 4spds are usually a lot cheaper to find. Use 1st for pulling stumps, the others for normal driving.
Also the 4spd was the HD option and has a HD clutch assy which translates to longer life. Unless you are into pain, pulling a 4spd is not a fun job.
I am pulling a flathead-6 and column-shift 3 speed out of a '50 F1 tonight. Will be selling both cheap, along with the steering column. I am in Nashville, TN.
