C4? Nope. C4's are three-speed automatics.
Your four speed is most likely a T19 or NP435 (if first gear
is synchronized. Can you get your trans into first gear when
the truck is rolling without grinding? If yes, first is
synchronized). The NP435 has an aluminum top cover.
If first is not synchronized, you most likely
have a T18 (or maybe a T98). Look at the following webpage
to ID your tranny.

No rear cover MIGHT be a 9 inch. There's a trick for IDing
the 9 inch using a socket (a socket won't fit over all the
pumpkin bolts...I can't remember it exactly). Someone will
help out here... please.

NP435's were definitely not synchronized. I have one and you can not shift into first w/o stopping.
I believe the T19's were synchronized.
Check out www.drivetrain.com. They have some good info on identifying transmissions.
The NP435 has an aluminum top cover and the t18 is cast. Both are unsyncronized.
