This might be a stupid question but here goes.Is there an easy way to line up the ball with the gooseneck without jumping in and out to pull up or back?I'm new to gooseneck trailers, my truck is a crew cab shortbed with a tool box so seeing the ball is not possible. thanks
The simplest thing I've found is an old magnetic mount cb antenna - just set it right in front of the ball, line the trailer hitch up on the antenna, and back up 'til you bump it.
I've seen people mount a wide angle mirror under the nose of the trailer where you can see the ball as you're backing up.
I think there are some commercial products available, mostly based on one of these two ideas anyway. Actually, I don't use anything - you get used to it after awhile, and can usually hit it right off.
When you are hitched up and in a streight line put a piece of tape on your (inside) rear view mirror and one on the back window of your truck that are in line with the gooseneck of your trailer. (This is what I do.) Before you unhook place a block behind your tire so you can tell how far back to backup the next time you hookup. Good luck
I use a telescoping pocket magnet and do the same thing ramblincowboy does. The nice thing about doing it this way is you can back in at a different angle and by watching the magnet and lining up with the gooseneck you will be lined up.
I have seen a device actually sold, basically the magnet base, and a tennis ball on top, when it touches, you are set. Same for a bumper hitch, just use two...
