5th wheel/gooseneck

What do you call a 5th wheel and what do you call a gooseneck?

Ive always called the ball hitch a gooseneck?
The neck comes out and bends down to the ball =gooseneck?

Fith wheel is a flat round plate and pin like semis use.

I just drove 40 miles to look at a 5th wheel trailer and when I got there it was a gooseneck (ball in bed).
The guy called it a 5th wheel on the phone.

Wonder why people cant standardize what they call them?

Another one is camper /travel trailer.
Around here a camper goes in the back of your pickup and you tow a travel trailer.

I always get a picture of a truck towing a camper along behind with a rope when people talk about towing there campers.

Only was I can see to tow a camper is to put it on a trailer behind your truck.

I agree that the gooseneck/fifth terminology should be standard and in most cases is. However, the camper question is not quite so simple. As far as I know the pop-up type trailers have almost always been called campers. I used to own a Coleman and even in the owners manual it was referred to as a camper. So to me a pop-up is a camper, something with hard sides is a travel trailer.

agreed on the Gooseneck and 5th wheel definition.

to me, a camper is a unit in which one can camp.

a pop up is a type of camper (often called tent campers around here)
a travel trailer is a type of camper (sometimes called "bumper pull" or "tag along")
and you can have a 5th wheel camper. (usually just called a 5th wheel here, because most flat bed/cargo trailers are goosenecks, not 5th wheels)

never seen a gooesneck camper, but i suppose one could build one.

what you call a camper, i would call a pickup camper.

what others call a pickup camper, or camper shell, i would call a topper (hardside bed cover for cargo).

"geographic vernacular" is almost impossible to get around, though.

there was someone who once said he could pinpoint your location within 10 miles just by talking to you for about a half hour, the venacular you use can be that specific.

example: if you go to a bar or resturant and order a "tavern" you are probably from Tyndall, SD, or the surrounding few small towns. And if that is true, your "pigs in a blanket" are made out of cabbage.

somewhat unavoidable.

I agree with your definitions of 5th wheel and gooseneck.

That said, what type of trailer did you go look at? Flatbed? 5th wheel camper? If it was a 5th wheel camper it could have had a gooseneck converter on it or even a goosebox. If it was a flatbed, I'd write the owner off as a knucklehead.

As far as campers go, if it slides in the bed I call it a truck camper. Pop ups, well, I call pop ups. Travel trailers are hard side bumper bull trailers, and 5th wheels, again 5th wheels or 5'vers. Those are specifics, but fars as I'm concerned, any one is a camper.
