Haha, yeah when I first planned on the CCV mod, I went and bout 20' of black heater hose as that's what I'd read to use... then further reading and folks suggested the clear vinyl hose, and said it'd hold up just as well. Soooo... I've got 20' of heater hose sitting in the attic. The clear is great because you can see any potential obsructions.
I would think that the clear would gunk up the whole way on the inside and you would see nothing but black everywhere. I'm guessing that's not the case? I recently noticed that there is some oil on the outside of the heater hose for my CCV, in the low spots, apparently oil is seeping through the hose. So, I'm looking to replace it. Maybe I should try the clear vinyl type.
The clear vinyl type seems to be holding up real well, Jeremy. The first few feet of it, where it first comes off the valve cover, is definitely pretty brown/black and cloudy. However, farther down the hose, it's still clear all the way, aside from the bit lining the bottom at the couple low spots.
If you replace yours, I think you should go with the clear hose.
I had mine coming down the back of my fuel tank near the rear axle, I changed it because I was starting to see oil in the line at 2 low spots where the hose was on the frame rail. Now it exits at the front of the fuel tank right off the frame rail. I get less smell now then when it was further away.
Ryan, if my vent ever does get plugged, what are the symtoms? I assume it will blow oil out the seals? Reason I ask is I seem to have developed a small "weep" coming out of the oil pan gasket, but I still have smoke out the vent. I am wondering if the weep is due to the -5 temp we had the last couple days.
With your truck running, pull the dipstick out. If you see the vapor being forced out of the dipstick tube at that time, then your CCV is most likely plugged. Also, check the end of the CCV hose. At idle, I've always got a little vapor coming out of it.
JT, I checked the dipstick tube, I do get a very small amount of vapor when I pull the stick, but I do have a good amount coming out the vent as well when idling. I assume this is normal?
I have the Raycor Filter for my CCV and I love it. A bit expansive at first but keeps the sludge out of the turbo and no bad smells associated with othe CCV mods.

Here is how i have mine, and i have no problems with it. When i removed the elbow at Fall Brawl, i had some grey sludge (about a quarter's size) on the elbow. I guess the combination of parking outside in the rain, with no drain hole and the CCV gasses made this sludge. Now i have a drain hole.
It's perpindicular to flow, and it's working fine.
Kris,
You can go one better and grind a small slit in the front side of that small tube to allow some exhaust gas to flow "through" the small tube instead of around it only. That's how the setup is on my racecar.
How long have you had the Racor setup on there? We've heard that they were causing some problems when they first came out...
I have had the Racor CCV3550-FRD-02 for 6 months and about 10,000 miles now. I have taken it apart a few times now to check the element. I havnt seen any problems or leaks. I am going to change the element next month with my oil change. John, what kind of problems did you hear about?

There have been a few threads on here about them not venting or performing well. I was looking into one since I don't really care to vent it under the truck and at the time I could've gotten one for cost. Maybe they've fixed the problems or the problems that were circulating around were user/installation related.
I'm sure if they're were any problems with yours they would've been seen by now with the mileage.
