I think not. The check valve might malfunction and you won't know till you see oil leaking from the engine.

If the setup is routed into the exhaust correctly, there should be no backpressure, and no need for a check valve. Someone on here ran a check valve, and actually found it to be a restriction.

I think you're seeing it more for those reasons... colder and darker. You can see it easily because of the headlights backlighting it, as Jeremy mentioned.

Also, like aklim mentioned, I've read that it billows out more in the winter when its cold. I've noticed that on my truck, too.

It appears to be coming from the CCV mod. Since doing the mod most of my driving has been done during the day, now that it is getting darker earlier that will change.
I have seen the same with my truck. It's normal and nothing to worry about.

Mine is routed to the rear of the truck, and was wondering if the hose should be drained from time to time to prevent backup and eventual leaking in the engine? I do have it routed up and over the master cylinder before it goes down and back along the frame.

That is why I have it going to the exhaust. For more suction. Do you also have any humps in the hose?

Since yours goes over the master cylinder, you have nothing to worry about. The oil drains back into the crankcase.

I have mine setup just like yours. You should see the gasses coming out of the tube while the engine is idling. If you do not see or feel any gasses exiting the tube then you could have a kink or blockage in the line somewhere.

What I have been told ids many commercial applications (like UPS) route the CCV gasses to atmosphere like you have setup.

It is definitely smoking, it is just that I had noticed a oil film on the rear of the hose, and was just curious how much oil actually gets up and over the master cylinder. Sounds like it is nothing to worry about-

Mine is set up like yours, and with a clear hose, so I can see any blockages. Although it goes up over the master cylinder, some oil still makes it past (probably from some of the vapors condensing?). It's tough to route a hose that far back along the frame without getting a couple low spots. In each low spot I have just a bit of oil. I'll keep an eye on it but I don't think there are any spots that could become blocked even with a lot of oil, like a U-bend pipe coming off your toilet, because none of them go that low.

My plan is to give them a looksee every once in a while, and if they start building up more oil than I'd like, then I'll either make one large low-spot and install a T so I can drain it, or I'll just cut the hose so it ends basically right around the tranny, w/ just a straight run down, like the T444E comes from International.

Not really, surprisingly enough. Even on a cross wind it just blows away and doesn't curl up into the windows. Underway, nothing.

Clear hose, now why didn't I think of that?? Kudo's, that was a very good idea.
