I have a 77' F100 with a 300 I6. I have a carter 1 barrell carb and an aftermarket air cleaner. The aftermarket air cleaner is about the size of a big doughnut. I can definately tell a difference in performance and the ability to start. Are there any other aftermarket aircleaner assemblies that I can purchase that would enable my truck to breathe better?
Thanks

thanks to the lack of any real aftermarket for the 300 i had to make my aircleaner assembly.
i used a chrome top lid from a aftermarket holly unit for a 4 bbl. for the bottom lid i used a piece of flat sheet metal, i traced the outline of the bottom lid and cut it out with a jigsaw.
the carbboard center from a empty roll of duct tape slides over the top of the stock 1bbl perfectly, so i used it to trace a circle in the middle of the sheet metal that i cut out for the bottom lid.
i found a fram airhog that fit the holly lid, i used a longer bolt to hold the new open aircleaner to the carb.
the new aircleaner assembly helped out a little with power, mostly since my old aircleaner assembly became nothing but duct tape and was pluged with leafs
It is true that the stock air cleaner is better however; I do not possess the stock air cleaner or the assembly. I trashed it because I had to order a new air cleaner anyway. My vehicle was made in Mexico and as such there are many oddball parts. The auto parts stores were always stumped when I came in with parts and numbers as they did not fit their books. I remember going through several books once with an auto parts guy to find a part, and finally he found some fine print that described the part I was looking for.
aww that sucks i would give you my stock one but i kinda destroyed it sorry... I have seen adapters at certain autoparts stores to put a 4-bbl aircleaner assembly on a 1bbl carb
i'm using a 4 barrel with an adapter. the only problem is the cheap plastic adapter isn't the best. when it get's warm it tends to slide inthe the air filter. i use k&n 12" filter, and once the whole thing fell off the carb while driving. i found it all, the filter was stuck to the exaust pipe. i want to make a metal plate for the top of the carb that will fine into the bottom of the air filter, then just pop rivet it in place. i think the filter, top and bottom crome and a piece of threaded rod to hold it all together was about $90 canadian.
I did considerable amounts of research to find out where it was made. It came with a ton of emissions garbage on it, thus the oddball air cleaner and assembly. I have even had to convince people it has different rear end than most. One guy insists that all 77's half tons came with 9" rear ends. Anway, yes they did make them in Mexico and I beleive it was sold in California.
Remember that carb icing will cause loss of power and performance. That was the reason for the heated air controls on the airbox. Find an OEM airbox that will fit with a large filter element and hook it up properly. Otherwise you will be loosing both performance AND gas mileage. Just be glad you don't have a van, those are tough to get right...
