Air Cleaner Question

So my friend that works on F100s took a look at my truck a couple of days ago and noticed that the door on the snorkel of my air cleaner was closed, restricting the airflow. The hose that normally pulls the door open is not connected on my truck, and the piece that the hose normally connects to is gone as well. I have since taken the air cleaner off and removed the spring, wedging the door open for now.

I guess my questions i this: Is there any way that an open filter air cleaner or an aftermarket air cleaner that has less restriction than the stock one can be fitted to my 390? It has the stock 2 barrel carb, and the PCV valve connects to the air cleaner housing off the oil filler cap. I haven't seen any open filter air cleaners that allow for this connection.

I have also heard of folks removing the snorkel completely from the air cleaner housing, placing a piece of metal vent mesh in the snorkel's place...

Thoughts?

The factory setup is pretty restrictive IMO, i run an open element air filter...

The internal combustion engine is nothing more than a big air pump, air in, air out, the more efficiently you can expedite this process the better.

I agree...how do you connect the PCV valve connection to an open air filter? The 390 V8 has a connection coming out of the oil filler cap into the side of the air cleaner. How does the PCV valve work if I get rid of the air cleaner case with the fitting and go with an open air filter?

I just got a cheapo edelbrock filter the other day, it has a little 5/8 port (standard size for PCV) on the bottom of it that does the same thing as the old air cleaner for the PCV. You just need like 12" of some multipurpose hose to hook it up and you're home trees boys.

Just connect the PCV to the base of the carb, or to the intake manifold, either will work, it only needs manifold vacuum to function properly.

On the other side of the engine just run a breather/oil fill cap, this will allow an intake of air to complete the crankcase ventilation process.

2x with Montana_highboy.

PCV...hmm. I recommend running an open element air cleaner with a 14x3 K&N (or equivalent) filter.

My preference would be to run a Ford-spec housing like the $28 Hi-Po version linked below.. get a 390 decal and you're the bomb. It's Ford-spec in that it has a recessed lid unlike, for example, an Edelbrock version where the top is slanted which is a GM-type lid.

It comes with an optional fitting to operate a closed PCV system. Meaning, the driver's side hose on the oil fill cap connects to its base allowing it to draw in filtered air. The hose from the PCV (passenger side) will still connect to the carb's base.

I've been running an open open K&N air filter for years there great, but lately i'am thinking of using the factory fresh air.It seems to me that the stock cleaner is more restrictive but how much air do you realy need. How much cfm can you pull throw a factory snorkle and how much cfm can your motor pull.I going to try the factory fresh air with K&N fiter and see if there is a difference.cool air is better air.
