This comming up weakend im going to aquire a new (used) cab for my 86 ranger. my truck is 4x4 the donor cab is comin off a 2wd. one question i have is should i just swap the cabs and change the tags over to match the 2wd vin as this will also have it insured as a 2wd. or should i pull the windshield and swap the vin plates. (not sure how legal that is even though i will own both cabs) or go to the dmv and have the new vin redone to show it on a 4x4 chassis making it a salvage title? also any tips or tricks to switching the 2? i know i have to unplug everything and take the frontend, fenders and doors off. and remove the seat and carpet to lighten things up. i have a 3 ton chain hoist and 2 20' straps that can aid in lifting it off. any help or suggestion will be greatly aprreciated.
As far as the VIN plates I believe it's illegal to switch the plates and tags, but I would really call your local DMV and ask them what is the best way to go about that. They have to have a legal way since I am sure people have repaired vehicles in the past.
