vin decoding confusion

I'm trying to decode my vin, and am having trouble. From what I found, I have an f100, not an f150 (What is the difference?) and according to the first three of the vin it is 4wd, but according to the other numbers it is a 2wd. There is also no info for the front axle ratio. Here are my numbers>

Vin: x14hkba7119

Next line:

155 R X143 ARM A 16J
06400 1978 14

Here it says the X143 makes it a 2wd???

<table border="1" cellspacing="0" width="100%"><tbody><tr><td bgcolor="#FFF4E6" valign="top">X143</td> <td valign="top">'78-'79</td> <td>F100 2WD Super Cab Pickup</td> <td align="center">6400</td></tr></tbody></table>
1973-1979 Ford Truck VIN Tag Codes (Model) - FORDification.net

There is also no ARM listed in the body code section?

Any ideas??

*Something else I just noticed, if you go by the vin decoder, my truck was assembled in Kansas City, but up in the top right of the tag it says: Made in Cananda. ??

mine says X14 = F150 4wheel drive super-cab ... X10 = 2wheel drive super-cab .. H = 351m 2bbr carb .. K built in Kansas city MO ... Sequence of assembly -BA7119 = 1978
I don't have the rest of it handy at the moment. Fordification is a good site but there specialty is 67-72 ford pickup info.

I had read somewhere before that x14 meant f150, but don't remember where. That site contradicted everything I knew.

Here it says the X143 makes it a 2wd???
X14=F150 4WD supercab pick up
H=351 cu in 2bbl V8
K=Kansas City Assy Plant
BA7119=1978 model year consecutive serial number

WB 155=155" wheelbase
COLOR R=Light Jade exterior paint
MODEL X143=Pickup, super cab 6400 lb GVW F150 4WD
TRIM ARM=(AR)Jade all vinyl interior(M)?? Not listed-this digit indicates back of cab equipment, most common is 4, that's styleside bed
TRANS A=NP435 4speed
AXLE 16J=(16)3.50 ratio Ford 9" non-locking 3600 lb capacity (J) w/ power steering
06400=6400lb GVW
1978=1978 Model year
DSO 14=Pittsburg District Sales Office

It was not uncommon for Ford to not list front axle info other than p/ steering
All this info comes directly from the Ford parts catalog.

Cool, thank you. I'm gonna go ahead and guess that the front is also 3.5 ratio. It's a dana 44.

Would the M maybe have something to do with the rear bench seat as opposed to jump seats? Nothing else on the truck from the cab back seemed unusual.

Is there a way to get all the info for another truck without having the warranty plate? I scrapped the cab and didn't get a pic of the plate, now I'm curious what gearing the truck has.

I would think too that if you are gettin a lot of contradictions that maybe sometime along the line other parts were used for this truck like salvaged parts and such. Just a possibility.

need vin help

Sorry to revive an old thread but I didn't know what else to do. I have a 1978 F-350 4 speed V-8. Former U-Haul truck. Can't figure out what engine it has and no vin info matches either. The vin is F37ZUCE3094. We suspect that the engine is a 330 but aren't sure. If it is a 330 can I easily swap in a 361 or a 391 as the current engine is seized up tight from sitting?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

1973/78 F350's made exclusively for U-Haul came with FT engines. If a 330 2V Medium Duty, the VIN engine code is C

But, 330 2V Heavy Duty and 361's were also installed, so that's why the VIN engine code is a Z, because these were domestic special order engines.

F37 = F350 Cab & Chassis.

Z = D.S.O. (Domestic Special Order).

U = Louisville KY Assembly Plant.

CE3094 = 1978.

In order to find out which engine it is, you'll have to contact martiauto.com as he has all the original 1967/79 FoMoCo records.

Kevin Marti, a Shelby/Mustang 'nut' acquired these records in the late 1980's, when he found out that FoMoCo was planning to THROW THEM AWAY!
