Ok I want to do a cab swap because the cab I have has rust on the roof and is going to cost more to fix then just buying a whole new cab. I can get a very nice cab for 300-500 dollars. The cab is going to be off of a 1975 F250 and go on to my 1974 F100 4x4. When I asked the junk yard about buying the cab they said I buy the cab like im buying the entire truck and that involves DMV paper work. So when I swap the cab my F100 is now going to be an F250 because of the VIN swap. How do I swap VIN's and keep my VIN the same?

I don't believe that's accurate. In most states the FRAME vin is what the truck is titled by.
On Fords the warranty plate (Ford doesn't call it a VIN plate) is mounted on the door, its not permanently attached to the structure. So in most states the warranty plate isn't used for title purposes, a door is easily changed.
Starting in 1980 the VIN plates were permanently attached to the dash at the base of the windshield, that might be a different story.
You can replace the cab door with the one off of your old cab or you can also get a reproduction warranty plate from Kevin Marti, along with the special rivets. Marti Auto Works - Concourse Quality, Hobbyist Price . To really do it right, you can also get a reproduction federal cert sticker for the door jamb.
Wow thanks for the info and pics. I wonder why the junk yard said I have to do DMV paper work for the cab? Maybe they are thinking the vin is attached? Just to confirm a 1975 F250 cab will fit a 1974 F100 4x4 short bed right?

IF the F250 is 2WD it will be a bolt on swap. F250 4WD (AKA "highboys") used a narrower frame but even those will fit. On them you only need to redrill the rear body mount holes in the cab, the fronts are okay.

More than likely that's the case. You figure these trucks are at least 34 years old. Try getting a Carfax, not enough numbers in the VIN. Starting in '80 the VIN was permanently attached to the structure and I'm not sure of the legalities involved in removing/changing them.
That's probably what the salvage yard is used to dealing with. But, based on that line of thinking, you need to transfer the title whenever you change the driver's door but you don't have to when you change the passenger door. Not too practical.
I did a cab swap on mine ('73 truck/'75 cab) and didn't have to do anything. Where I live (Florida), all that is is body work.
Also if the f250 is 2wd he will have to swap the radiator support in order to use the radiator out of his f100 4x4. If I remember right the radiator support on a 4x4 has brackets on it for the radiator to mount to and the 2wd have the mounts on the radiator itself... If that makes sense. Or you can always just use a 2ws drive radiator. Just something I ran into in my cab swap

I think he's doing just a cab swap so he'd probably be using the same rad. support. Swaping an F250 cab onto an F100 4WD frame.
yes the donor cab is a 2wd and lucky for me its just about bare as it sits. no windows no dash etc etc. so looking for rust was easy and I will have no surprises.
its heavy more help the better. last one i helped with we left the front clip and everything in the cab. the big loader tractor didnt even struggle with it. but we did we had to put the bolts back in.
