I have been having intermittent problems with a blinking OD light and
a speedometer that does not move. A tech at the Ford dealership once told me he'd pulled a code suggesting the VSS was bad. So, with that knowledge and pointers from this forum, I changed out the VSS on the rear axle about a week ago.
The one that came out was really pretty nasty....
Unfortunately, I still have those blinking OD lights and speedometer not working blues.
It does not happen every time you start the truck, and if you turn the truck off and re-start it, the issue goes away......almost like you are re-booting the computer.
Does anyone have any other suggestions where I might look next?
mine does this everyonce in while if it has set out in alot of rain over night. it usually stops within 30 mins of drive time though....if you find out what is doing this please let me know...mine has never thrown a code while doing it.
i had a flashing O/D light, but i had other problems, bad tranny, and the range sensor was bad. and i also had to bad wires going from the pcm to the range sensor. so you may want to try and see if ur plugs are clean going to the range sensor and where ever els.
Your New VSS just might to be bad also.. Mine was doing exact same thing.. blinking OD light and the speedo would not work.. Shuting the engine off and restarting it cured the problem for a day or so.. But, after replacing the sensor on the rear-end, it has not reoccurred since..(about a year ago). Got mine from Napa, P/N 530780 and they call it a ABS sensor.. $10.49.

I could be way off base here but I had similar problems that were resolved by a wheel hub assembly. Not that your whole assembly is bad. I think clintbonnie has the right idea about an ABS sensor.
My new wheel hub had a new ABS sensor and resolved two issues. Unintentionally, the flashing overdrive light issues I was experienceing was resolved by replacing that ABS sensor, or in my case the whole wheel hub assembly.
Aside from a bad brand new sensor, probability=low, I would say replace the fluid and clean that mess out. This is not a CPS although it works on a similar principal. Might have a lot of stuff that gets into suspension. If that does not help it, then look elsewhere. Of course this is after confirming you don't have any wiring issues going back there. In my experience, the ABS sensors are not as susceptible to failure but do bear some investigation. They are exposed. A wiring check there may also be in order. Not all of our PSDs have 4 wheel ABS. Good luck.
Well, speaking of the ABS, my ABS light on the dash goes crazy every morning....turns on and off several times. Often, the OD light and speedo issues crop up after I let the truck idle and warm up a few minutes, and the ABS light stops flashing.
I'd read on a previous post that this could be expected when your VSS was out.....but do you guys think that maybe I have an ABS issue?
Sounds just like the same problems I had before I lost my entire wheel hub assembly. Beyond the lights as you described, it started making a rubbing/grinding noises with a week or two but only when turning. Had trouble identifing it at the time. Went bought brake parts with that thought in mind. Started digging into it only to find the brakes were fine and it what the wheel hub.
By the time I finally got to fixing the wheel hub it had practically exploded. You might check em out. Again I may be way off base and not as experenced as some around here, but I'm sure someone will chime in. Take off the wheels one at a time and give the hub a turn by hand. You should be able to feel and tell if thats your problem before you go out and buy anything expensive. I could hear the brakes, but you could also definately hear and feel the hub wasn't spining smooth or easy.

Just my $.02 for whats its worth.
Crash, was this happening with your front or rear wheels?
MikeIt was my front left wheel. I would start up front personally. I heard that bad alignments can cause extra stress on the wheel hubs and cause failure. Someone did point out that not all of our trucks have 4 wheel ABS. I think its was 2001 that it became standard on all super duty trucks. I remember reading that spec just the other night. Definately check the wiring. Besides a brake line, maybe a vacume line for your auto lock hubs, the only other wire or connection on each wheel is for the ABS sensor. I will reference Guzzle's site again cause I love it so much. PROPS to him. In the dissasembly section of his link it talks about and shows disconnecting the ABS sensor. The link is about lubing the needle bearing but shows removal of the wheel hub assemble and referenced to the ABS connector and sensor.
I'm by no means that knowledgeable but this just sounds like something I've expereinced. But let me know what you find. I'm curious how you get it fixed
