Ok I need some help? I have a 97 f150 4x4 with 128000 miles on it. About 2 months ago the OD off light started flashing. I called ford and they told me to change the vehicle speed sensor, so I did. It seemed to be fine for a week but then the light came back on. Then I started to get a shutter in the tranny when it shifted. So I took it to a tranny shop that is really trusted here. They ran presser checks and checked the codes but there were no codes even when the light was blinking so they called ford. Ford told them the shuttering could cause the light to blink and put out no code. So they changed the tranny fluid, filter and put some shutter stop in the tranny. They also put a chip in to raise the presser to the lock up clutch. This all stopped the shuttering almost immediately. But the light still came on. So they took it to another shop to put it on a different scanner. This scanner showed no codes but said there was a week signal from the mps and a noisy signal from the vss. So they changed them both and the truck ran good for 1 week. Then the light came back on. Then the shop did some checking and found a serves bulletin that said that there are two speed sensors (one on the transfer case and one on the diff) and that they should be changed in pairs. So I changed them both. And it was good for 1 week and then the light came on. So when we change the vss it will work fine for 1 week and then something is making the vss go bad. What could make the vss go bad all the time? Also I am sure that the shutter was from the light and not the other way around.
I'm wondering if maybe the VSS isn't going bad but maybe you have a wiring problem?
Possibly when you change the VSS it disturbs the wiring and it starts working again.
