I've got an 87 F150 XL 4.9L, and didn't even know it had ABS, what reasons are there that the indicator light would come on and go off? It comes on when I start the truck, stays on for a few minutes then goes off. occasionally it comes back on during driving, but I can't seem to intentionally duplicate any circumstances to make it come on.
im not sure if your year has it, but there is a sensor on the top of the rear diff. This sensor reads the teeth on the ring gear. The sensor costs 11-25$ from local parts store. Mine was doing the same thing as yours so i replaced the sensor and everthing is peachy now. I have a 93f-150

Try wiggling the connection to the float switch on the master cylinder. I had the ABS light come on intermittently and when I replaced the master cylinder, it went out. Came back on intermittently after that, so I checked the wiring and sure enough, the pins had pushed out of the plastic connector on the wiring harness. I made sure to get a good connection on the wires and haven't had a light since. The ABS will not work if the light is on. I'm not sure about the newer trucks, but on my 87 there is a wire under the dash near the parking brake pedal that you can short to ground when the light is on and make the ABS computer blink out a trouble code. That wire on my truck is black with an orange tracer.
My 1987 F-150 4x4 just started doing the same thing. I have replaced all brake lines, calipers, shoes, spring kits, and drums, everything but the rubber brake pad on the pedal.
Everything was fine and all i donewas put the bed back on my truck and that light started comming on.
So Admiral, it you figure it out please fill me in as to what you done to fix it.

Just wanted to update this. I asked my uncle (the local Auto-Yoda) about the light commin on and goin off, and he asked me if I'ld recently replaced the front calipers and/or bled just the front. When I told him I had, he had me unhook and remove the Pressure Differential Valve from the master cylinder, bleed said master cylinder and reinstall it. The light only comes on when it's supposed to now.
Are you talking about the float switch (three wires that attach on the drivers side)? I had a loose connection there, which caused an intermittent ABS light; I'm guessing you had the same problem.
Actually, the problem I ran into was I pulled a rookie mistake and didn't bleed the breaks in the right order, and must have trapped air in the system. I got quite a few bubbles out when I bled the master cylinder itself. After I put it all back together, the light stayed off except for the start-up cycle.
