Hello. I own a 99 expy,5.4,121k.mi. I've owned her almost a year and couldn't be happier with it. It did not come with an owners manual. I downloaded one off of the internet. My abs light started coming on. Not all the time, but when it comes on it stays on solid. According to the manual if I had 4 wheel abs the icon should say 4abs, if rear only, the icon reads abs. Is this true? I am assuming that I only have rear abs. My other question is where are the abs sensors located? As I have said this is my first Ford and the haynes manual says to check the BOO switch(?) among other things. Once agin thanks for any future help and thanks for putting up with the noob!!!
BOO=Brake On/Off switch. In other words, the brake light switch down on the brake pedal. As for the 4abs vs. abs, if that's what the manual says, then who are we to argue!
Each of the front wheels has a sensor. You can find them by looking for the wire running to each of the wheel hubs. The rear sensor (only one) is located on the top of the rear differential.
Thanks for the info. Is the vss sensor the same as the rear abs sensor. After doing some searching I am beginning to confuse myself!!!!
Also I've read that you can take the abs sensors out, clean them, and reinstall them to see if that would help with the idiot light . If I do this would you recommend cleaning it with a small magnet to get any/all of the metal particles off of it. I was just going to use my magnetic piccup tool for this. Not a very strong magnet. I just do not want to ruin the sensor with a magnetic field. Once again thanks for all of your help.
If you want to determine the cause of the ABS warning indicator illuminating, the first step is to have the DTC(s) read by a scan tool that can communicate with the ABS module on your truck. For what it's worth, I don't think I've ever seen a RABS equipped Expedition in my years of wrenching on Fords. I agree with the above poster that the rear diff sensors were very common to fail. For the extremely inexpensive cost of this sensor, it's not even worth considering trying to remove and clean it, without just outright replacing it. But again, the first step is to have the DTC(s) read, to determine why the ABS light is illuminating.
