99 Ranger 2.5 P1401 Code
The engine starts right up, but idles a bit rough when cold.
At speed when running, seems to run just OK, but with little power. On the road, after slight deceleration, reacceleration is a bit rough, engine stumbles but eventually smooths out after a few seconds as if a valve, piston, whatever is taking its time resetting. Replaced the EGR valve with litle change in performance. When I installed a new DPFE the engine would hardly run. Bucked, skipped and wouldn't idle. Restart was nearly impossible. Checked the hoses - small hose on small nipple, large hose on large nipple. Elec connection tight. Put the old DPFE back on and the engine was back where I started.
Now what!!?
My old DPFE is the metal design. The only replacement DPFE I can find is the plastic type. Are they interchangeable?
In doing some research on the EGR system I found a site giving the specs on both types. Seems the metal style has a .055 or 1.0 volt null output, the plastic case style has a 1.0 volt null output. Is it necessary to match the plastic 1.0 volt DPFE with a new EVR?
I need to get this thing fixed.
If you look up the P01401 code HERE you will see that it gets set as a result of a check of the DPFE sensor circuit.

So those things associated with the circuit should be checked. Examine and clean the harness connector (look for corrosion bent pins, etc.) and follow the harness to see if there are are any problems with the wires. For example, an open in the VREF wire would cause a P0401 since the voltage does not match the expected response.
A P0401 could also be generated for a "hose off" error which includes a plugged hose. So check the hoses to and from the DPFE for any problems.
Got it at Advance/Discount Auto. The service manager at the Ford dealership (I bought some new hoses to connect the DPFE and tried to pick his brain a little about the EGR system) seemed to find that a bit humorous. Fortunately I got my $$ back, so that took a little of the sting out.

Plenty of good information there, Thanks much.

I just hope it's not electrical. I hate electrical problems.
Is there a test for the Electronic Vacuum Regulator?
Is there a test for the Electronic Vacuum Regulator?
The skipping doesn't sound like a plug type misfire, but rather a softer skip. Hard to explain. All cylinders are firing according to a plug wire check.
I'm stumped on all this computer controlled stuff. Where next?
