1996 Ranger

Can someone tell me how much and what grade oil to use in a 1996 ranger with the 4 cyl motor? just bought this truck for a transport car. 97k miles.

anything i should be worried about?

It takes a little under 5 quarts, with a filter change.

You're supposed to run 5W-30; the guy I got my truck from didn't know that and ran Mobil1 10w-30. I'm starting to get some valve noise now that it's getting colder, and if I try to run 5w-30, it sounds like a machine gun.

If it was my truck, I'd try 5w-30, but I'd also be prepared to switch it out for the thicker stuff if it makes too much noise.

I run 5W-30 in my '95 2.3L, which is recommended.

I've ran 10W-30 before and it quieted the upstairs of my motor down, but made more noise on a cold start. I think I am going back to 10W-30 because my engine sounds like a freakin' diesel. At only 86K.

Try Castrol GTX 5w-30.

I would stick with the recommended weight. YOu can add an oil treatment such as Lucas if you are getting noise. Worked great in my 88 Jeep. Engine sounded like a tank before the treatment.
