starter motor spins with out key turned
Well here's my problem I had a problem with the truck 2001 power stroke and I had the battery tested and it turned out to be bad . Bendex would pop out but not spin. So I put in a new starter and hooked up the batterys and the damm starter moter just started spinning with out the keys even in the truck??? I have replaced the soliond on the front fender wall and it still has the same problem. I am lost anybody have any ideas????
Thanks in advance

It did the same thing with the old soliond (spelling???). I pulled it off and hooked it back up the exact same way. power cable to both post and then grounds to the post close to the fire wall and the one liltle wire that looks like a vacume line on it own liltle post. On the starter I placed the power wire to the post that didn't have anything elese on it. the one with out the ground. And the small power wire too the small post. It seems that if I hook up the battery on the passange side it does nothing but as soon as the driver side battery is hooked up it starts spinning.

Remove both wires from the starter. Check for continuity between the 2 posts on the starter. IF you have continuity the starter or solenoid or both is bad.
Is the starter you just put on is a reman or new? I've had a couple remans bad right out of the box. Remans are a crap shoot. So now I rebuild them myself ($50) at a buddies starter shop. He rebuilds these remans all the time and tells me "About the only thing the goes bad on these is the brushes or brush plates cracking and the gear hanging on the shaft." You do not get a new shaft and gear on a reman!
When the gear hangs on the shaft in the extended position it holds the solenoid in the 'on' position. The return spring is not strong enough to pull the gear/solenoid back. The reason for this is the very close tolerance between the gear and shaft. All it takes is a little pitting on the shaft, add a little dirt and the gear is stuck. Do not use oil to correct this problem it will only get worse. The oil attracks more dirt and it will happen again.

Well I got the truck running yesterday, I pulled the starter got it bench tested, no problems. Came home reinstalled it and the truck fired up. I have no idea what the problem was??? Then today I came out to the truck and tryed to start it and all it would do was turn over and not start. I called the shop to come pick it up and the mechanic came out and we got it fired up so they drove it too the shop to figure it out. It does have a remote start so I am hoping that is the problem, But who knows??? I will let you all know what the problem was when I am done getting raped by the shop to figure it out!!!
Thanks for all the help.
