Hi, my first time here. Been cruising the diesel forum for a few months now, my other vehicle is a 2002 F350 4X4 CC dually. My question is about my wife's 2000 Explorer V-6 4X4. 82,000 miles. I was driving it last night and when moving slow, either forward or reverse, didn't matter if the wheels were straight or turned it was making this clunking sound from the drivers side front wheel area. Very slight, not very loud yet. Can't really feel it in the steering wheel yet and it drives very nice on the freeway, no pulling or vibraitions. This is definately a clunk, not a squeek. If this was a front wheel drive vehicle I would say CV joints, but I really haven't even crawled under there to see if I can figure it out yet. Can anyone give me some diagnostic help so I can see if I can nail this down. Thanks for the replys!
one think to check is if it clunks once per revolution of the wheel. if so, it is probably on the wheel or brake related. if it does it randomly, then probalby part of steering system- suspension.
I had the same problem with my 1998. I had been searching for the noise for the last couple of months. My noise was coming from the inner tie rod end on the rack and pinion steering. I took the clamp off the boot around the inner tie rod, took a small screw driver and raised the boot enough to stick a straw from a lithium grease spray can inside the boot and sprayed the inner tie rod. Everything has been nice and quite for a week now.
My 98 too. It is like a popping or clicking. I can move the wheel (jacked) back and forth a little..... but the rack moves a little, so I can't tell if it is a bad ball joint or something in the rack itself.
