hi,i have a 1997 2 x 4, has any one experenced a clunk under the drivers feet when first moving away and during slow speed braking both forwards and backwards.
i have searched in the steering/suspension forums and it is possable that the cab mounting bolts are loose but i do not want to start pulling up carpets without your two-peneth.
i have checked the steering and found a upper arm ball joint shot so i have replace it. every thing else seems to be fine. i have stripped and cleaned the front disc breaks and they were found to also be ok.
any advice would be much appreciated as it has become a pain.
thanks brian, tryed the test in neutral, no sound at all.
for all the world it sound like another ball joint away but i cannot find it so, it is to be tested, ministry of transport yearly test, next week and if they find a fault i will post the info. thanks bokker.
hi,brian A my truck is an auto. the ministry test passed every thing all ok so there is nothing wrong with the suspension/ steering. this clunk is simply anoying.
the next thing that i will do is grease the pitman arm as there is a grease nipple. i do not want to lift the carpets to tighten the cab bolts just yet as it seems to be a pain to do. i will keep you all posted. bokker.
Am I correct with my understanding?
The clunk will occur when braking with the transmission in gear, but the clunk does not occur when braking with the transmission in neutral.
I'm trying to determine if it is an engine/drive line clunk (example: u-joint) or a chassis clunk (example: sunspension or steering component).
yes i see where you are coming from now. i will try slow speed stops in neutral.
the clunk sound only really happens i set away but once in a while at slow speed turns.
i have been unable to recreate the clunk by driving thru pot holes or swaying the steering etc.
i will check things out and get back to you.
