Thought would check see if member(s) face with simular situation and any if suggestions what to do about it. Purchased what was intended to be a project car and got half way into it but now has been setting for past few years. Concerned what appears to be minor rust issue does not become major. Time is running out w/ winter approaching and wonder if there is anything that can applied until spring. Frame is in good shape, completed it before getting distracted. It was in sad shape when I purchased it but looking forward to bring it back to life in the spring. Novice, but intend to sand body down to bare metal before getting into body work and painting. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Appreciate the input. Reside in redwoods where winter events can consist of attending banana stug races, to mushroom hunting excursions. Heavy rust at firewall, fender skirt, dash, top valance. Floor panel drivers side has eaten thru and will need to be replace. Small area in trunk. Exterior does'nt appear to suffer from serious rust problem but until strip the original 64 paint off won't know. Stored in a covered carport, but looking into transporting to So. part of state where rain fall, and moisture level must less. Thought there might be a product that I could apply that would seal and preserve until able to get to it in the spring. Came across article on 'variprime' but did not get into prep requirement. Coming to conclusion pretty much need to remove the rust before applying any product or rust will cont. regardless. Have used cutting torch on vehicles in better condition but on a mission to rescue the car.

Eastwood sells a product called Rust Encapsulator, which after removing any loose rust, dirt, and grease you just spray or brush it over the rusted metal. There are many products like this on the market like Rust Bullet, POR-15, etc. Even if you don't have time to prep the areas real good, spraying on one these products should stop the rust until you can get back to your project.
Appreciate the info. Went and ordered Por's along with their 'metal ready'. Thought would treat then apply coat of their paint. Called around and for couple of items heavily rusted will take them in and have them blasted before painting.
