If you have access to a scanner, then you can use that. Otherwise you can unhook the battery and that should clear them. You should leave it unhooked about fifteen minutes.
What are the codes? It's possible that as soon as you clear them, it will set the codes again. If I recall correctly, there is a capacitor or small battery on the computer board that takes a little while to go completely dead. Went to a tranny seminar back in Feb. and they touched on this, don't recall the details 100%.
I don't know about the scanner, but when you use the jumper wire to blink the check engine light, just pull the jumper while the codes are blinking and that erases the codes without resetting the adaptive stategies in the computer.
