What should I fix?

I just acquired an 1986 ranger 4x4 with the 2.9, the previous oner took the motor out and tore it all apart. Now i get to put it back together. just would like to know what I should check/replace while the motor is out. I know it needs new gaskets, but should i replace the main and cam bearings also?

Do you know why it was taken apart? If not, take the head and block to an automotive machine shop and have them check for wear and cracks etc.

These motors are known for cracking heads, so have them checked very carefully. They often crack around the base of the valve springs on the #1 and #6 cylinders. The other thing they're known for is lifter noise. If it's all apart anyways, yes, replace all bearings and the lifters and oul pump as well, and check the rocker arm shafts for wear. (Slide the rockers to the side against the springs and look at the shaft surface where they ride.)

Well, if you've got to bore it and go to the expense of a total rebuild anyway, why not swap in a 4.0?

Yes, but depending on which trans you have, it may have a problem handling the extra torque. But on the other hand, one of the earlier trannies used couldn't even stand up to the torque of pretty much any V6 for very long...!

Does your tranny have a separate bellhousing that can be unbolted from the tranny, or is the bellhousing integral with the tranny?

The best one is the Mazda M5R1. It has the integral bell and looks like this:

but now that I think about it, I believe it wasn't offered until '88. The most likely possibilty is the Mitsubishi FM145 which is not as strong, and it looks like this:

I think there's one other that was used in that time frame, but I believe it was 4X2 only so it shouldn't be a concern.

I'm not too sure on that. I've heard that it's not a great trans, so if it's in good shape it may hold up for a while but it would be good idea to look for an M5R1 out of a later Ranger, BII or Explorer. Maybe you can find a whole vehicle with the 4.0 and tranny that's been wrecked for cheap, then you'll have everything you need to do the swap.

I have heard about the Mitsubishi tranny being used behind a mild V8 in a swap, so maybe it's not too bad. I guess they actually built an adapter for it. Would be pointless if it won't even hold up.

I have a FM 145 that ran for 2 months with no gear oil and it did not hurt it one bit. It's been 2 years going strong sinse. I dont know if it will bolt up to a 4.0.
