Replacement Heads needed for 2.9L

Cracked heads on my 89 BII. I know World Products makes the best one out there $$. Has anyone tried any of the other remanufactures out there. I see some on Ebay for $175. Cylinder Heads International in TX has them also for $175.

Is there a long block still available for the 2.9L

As far as I know WP is the only company manufacturing aftermarket replacement heads for the 2.9. I think those that you see on Ebay are just rebuilt or new replacement stock heads and therefore just as prone to cracking as what you've got on there now.

There are used WP heads to be found. I have them on my Ranger, got 'em for free off a junk motor. The guy didn't know what they were.

Not sure about the long block but I seem to recall running across one, or maybe it was a shortblock, somewhere on the 'Net a year or so ago.

It's always nice to meet a person that doesn't know what they have from time to time .

I am not sure who manufacturered my heads, but I bought them off of ebay. They were brand new castings and stated that the cracking problem had been resolved. I paid $450/free shipping, no core charge. They were way heavier than the stock heads. I have not had a problem with them. Nor have the seen the same set from the manufaturer since I bought them.

That's strange. It's been said that the 89+ heads were supposively stronger. But apparently, not that much stronger. Be sure when you get the replacement heads, to make sure that the reason it overheated in the first place has been resolved. I've read posts where the owner just had the heads fixed, only have them crack again because they did not fix the inital problem. That's not good for anyone .

World Products is the only aftermarket manufacturer that I know of, I'm going to be switching over to them when mine go.

Anybody else know about the $175 heads?

I just looked them up. The ones on Ebay are the ones from Cylinder Heads International in Texas that 99Mountain mentioned (I looked at their site as well)

They look okay but they are just a stock rebuilt head. Seems like a good price and decent on the shipping as well. If using them, be sure you have your cooling system problems worked out first. I paid 50 bucks for a used Ranger 4.0 radiator for my truck and it doesn't even think about getting hot any more. Came out of a fully loaded '91 with A/C, auto, the works. It's well worth doing.

I did find another pair of heads on Ebay that are currently at $365.00 for the pair with a day or so left, the ad says they are new aftermarket heads so they pretty much have to be WPs. If they go for somewhere around that price they would be a good deal, about 1/2 price. (Not likely-there'll probably be a flurry of bidding right at the end that pushes them up to around the regular price)

Thanks to "threespeed" I called Alabama Cylinder head. They have new ones for $185 each. Also order the 4.0L radiator from Radiator Barn. Gathered head bolts and all the gaskets. Ready to soon tear into it ??

Now the big question is this a big job? Is it best left to a professional mechanic or can a shade tree mechanic tackle the job. I have redone heads on 302's and 390's in the past. I am at home with a carb and points. Not so sure about all the electronics of newer engines.

The job is fairly straight forward. I did it myself the first time around. My heads cracked because of a blocked radiator and I had the heads braized up. The braizing worked great but the fact that the machinest mistakenly put in soft valve seats made it so the heads only lasted 35,000 miles before they sucked 6 valves. Then I got aftermarket heads with the gussets added into the castings. I have 100,000 miles on these now and still going strong. I paid to have this one done because of back problems. I wish I would have been there when my mechanic did the job. When I asked him if he torqued the heads the last quarter turn he said no he torqued them three quarters of a turn. I told him that the book says to turn the bolts 90 degrees after the last torque setting. He stupidly said "yes I know, 90 degrees is three quarters of a turn". I think he was glad we had this conversation on the phone and not face to face because his would've been very red...IDIOT!!! Anyway do the job yourself and save the mula.
