i have a 99 super duty with a 7.3 and am having a few problems. From some of the posts on here i think my problem might be the cps and would like to see what you think. my truck seems to crank too long when starting, and it doesnt seem to have the power a truck of that caliber with a 6 speed tranny should have.... also there was a period where when driving down the road it had terrible hessitasion and would buck and jerk. it was sooo bad i was very conserned about twisting a shaft or u joint.... besides having absolutley no power during that phase i got terrible fuel mileage. could it be the cps.... what do you think.. thanks for the help kramer
Sounds like the same problem I am having. Like its not running on all cylinders no power and a bad vibration but it seems to get better after it gets up to operating temp about 3 miles of driving. so I am going to change the cps tomorrow and hope it works. because from what I have been reading that sounds like it.
is this a constant loss of power or just an intermittent FULL loss of power? when the CPS goes, it seems to cut all power and make the truck stutter (engine shutting down and refiring quickly). if you have a problem where it constantly feels like it is running on 4 or 6 cylinders than it my be another problem.
A repair shop I had to have fix my truck in a pinch used an aftermarket CPS (unkown to me at the time). It was not "dead" but was "off" just enuff to throw off the timing and cause the exact same problems you are describing. It was bad enuff to cause a contribution test failure. Changed it out with my spare on Sunday and the truck is back to running like it did new.
Well basicly mine runs real bad in the morning..not firing on all cylinders untill it warms up..funny thing is I live in Southwest Florida and warming up my van when its 93deg outside is just not right i tell ya
Yes....it sounds like the CPS. HOWEVER....with the "seems to crank too long when starting" problem....that's probably just the battery. When I first bought my 2000 in June (2005)....I thought that it sounded sluggish and longish when cranking, but the dealership said it was fine (I brought it in when it conked out a couple of times)......This continued for a couple of months until finally, it either took forever to crank to a start, or it wouldn't start at all. As it turned out, I took it to Advance Auto, and they ran the meter on the batteries, and one of them registered almost dead (even though the voltmeter gauge appeared to be OK)......Got two new batteries and it's run like a top ever since (changed the CPS after this, and ditto on the results)....Just remember, these 7.3s NEED the two good batteries to give you a good, solid consistent start.....If one is weak, then you have problems. Ain't like a gasser......
Sooooo.....Battery problem and CPS are good guesses........
the loss of power problem was intermintant with hessitation and poor fuel response... it seemed to come in waves but then it just seemed to never stop ... and i charged both of the batteries all the way up and it does the same thing... but when it cranks for while it is cranking extremely fast... its not sluggish at all... just takes a while to fire
I found out today that on the 99 7.3L PS, if the serial number of your engine is earlier than #375549 use the pre 1999 CPS (F6TO12K073A) If the number is after that one the CPS number is F7TO12KO73A.
I did find both of these parts on EBAY for a great price, two day delivery.
