i am at my wits end ...this truck has been down for about 7 months, wasted time, money, and most important my pacients.. i have an 99 f250sd 7.3 with a manual 6 speed. it sounds great when it idles but doesnt seem to have great reaction when you bump the fuel sitting there... then once you take it down the road!!! no power!!! the turbo doesnt whistle or pull in the rpms... gets to about 2300 and just floats in every gear what is goin on..... and i just replaced the cps
i dunno about the hpop.... but i just replaced the pump (with kwikk's bosch fuel pump upgrade idea), 2 fuel filters because i thought that was it, the cps, dropped the fuel tank thinking it was bad fuel... i am goin nuts..... but what would the hpop have to do with it... you think it might not be suppling the injectors?
the HPOP is what supplys the injection pressure, no injection pressure=no power. either get it on a scanner or put a mechanical gauge on the head and see what kind of pressure the hpop is making, a bad IPR could also be bleeding off the pressure. does it smoke at all?
manual 6 speed... no power loss there..... i wouldnt think its the hpop it is and intermitant problem... i would think if its the hpop it would go and never come back.... it doesnt really smoke.. the turbo never whistles or seems to kick in and im way up in the r's it sould be there but its not
does it make any boost at all? smoke? a sticking IPR can be intermitant, check the nut on the back of the IPR make sure its not loose. if it was a turbo problem or a boost leak you would have no power but tons of black smoke. If you have a fueling issue you will have low boost, rpms are not what determine boost.
Hmmmm, won't make it past 2300 rpm, eh?
Does it take a lot of cranking to get it to start when the engine is fully warmed up? That would point to a weak HPOP.
But we are all just guessing here. You really need to take it in and have it properly diagnosed.
I see that you put in the fatter fuel pump. Just to make sure that you don't have a blocked fuel pickup or somethings silly like that, try a fuel volume test.
Rig up a hose at the fuel pump outlet.
You should get at least a quart in 30 seconds of air free fuel, 1/2 gallon would be about the best you could expect.
If you have a pressure guage try rigging it up to the engine with a long hose and go drive it, see what the fuel pressure does at WOT. It should remain basically unchanged. A couple of LB drop at WOT is ok. I've found that the injectors make a lot of noise that is sent down the fuel rail and it tends to rattle the fuel pressure regulator which causes a slight drop in fuel pressure. But if you get a severe drop at WOT then you have fuel supply problems that have to be addressed. It's a common problem IMO on the PSD due to the way that the fuel supply is designed.
it starts right up even when it cold. im pretty sure that i dont have a block in the fuel line from the tank to the filter housing because i just dropped the tank and blew the lines out... where would i hook in the presure gauge to check it.... but i still dont see why the turbo wont whistle and why it would be intermitant... what would be causing low fuel presure.... thanks for everyones help so far and im really hoping to get this resolved cause like i said this truck has been down for about 7 months
Man, it sure soulds like you have a boost leak. Are all of your intake hoses sealed tightly. If it won't make the boost, then I would recommend checking everything from turbo to engine. Do you have a boost gauge?
Also, I think nlemerise had a post on an inexpensive fuel regulator that should help you with where to hook up a gauge at the back of the bowl. It's fairly recent. Just look for it.
i will check all the tubes and piping tomorrow and no i dont have a boost gauge but the way it has no power and not pulling plus no turbo noise im pretty sure it not building it
Look real hard. Your truck sounds like what happens when there's a leak. Starts and runs fine, no real giddyup and go. Just plods along. Besides, check the free stuff first always.
is this something i shoould be able to hear with the engine running like a vacuum leak on a gasser or probably not because there will be no boost in the system at an idle... just something im gonna have to see that looks suspicious or loose.... plus if its a leak why would it be intermitant.. just a fluke loosing up and sealing again?
Are you sure your turbo is even turning? Have you checked it out? I would think a wastegate stuck open or linkage broke might cause your problem. Does look like you would have more smoke if low boost was you problem. Do you have any mods? Stock exhaust, muffler, Cat? Just fishing here.
I'm not following the intermittant part. You will have to elaborate there. I thought it basically had no grunt but ran otherwise.
As for hearing a leak, not likely. Not at idle and you won't be able to build any kind of boost just sitting there cracking the throttle without a load. You must physically inspect the system, both visually and by hand.
