Ok...I just got an 86 f250 ext. cab. I dont know how many speakers this thing has becasue it is not currently where i can look at it. I know it has two in the doors but it also has a gaping hole in the middle top of the dash board. I know this is not a mod becasue i test drove another one with a hole in it too and i thought it was a flaw. Is that a hole for a speaker or what? other than that are there andy speakers in the back?
originaly they came with either one in the hole you see in the center of the dash or in the doors. they have nothing in the back from factory. im currently buidling my system and choose some 6 x 9 truck boxes to go behind the seat. was the best option i found.
yea, sorry to say it but this year of truck has a pretty crappy setup. i had an 85 and i had to redo it all. id recommend ditching the one in the dash, replacing the ones in the doors and then putting 2 behind the seat just like suggested
i do have one in each door and one in the dash. Why should i ditch the the one in the dash? The ones in the doors are 6.5's correct? I found a really good deal on ebay that has three 6.5's.
The one in the dash makes a great CB speaker but really doesn't lend itself to a specific Left or Right channel speaker. Perhaps a center channel in a serious surround sound setup now that I think about it.
It's best to just cover over the hole(they always seem to form that hole) and put in some nice amp'ed 6"x9"s suspended in the rear corners.
Is there any kind of componant speaker i can put in there that may be decent? i understnad where your coming from with it not being left or right channel. Is there a way i could go about putting something else in there that might be decent? honestly i dont need a CB and a sub would rattle the heck out of my dash.
A standard head unit, aftermarket or otherwise, does not lend itself to having a center channel. I suppose you could put 2 tweeters in there, side by side, L & R.
The limit is your imagination since I don't think anyone has really come up with a fantastic use for that speaker mount.
I have no idea on how much room is there, but I do know that there are speakers for Home audio installations that have dual voice coils and 2 tweeters. Might be more $ than its worth to do it, but they are out there. Personally, I'd get a small amp and put a single 6x9 or small 8" woofer in there to supplement the bass. Or you could put a board acrossed it and get a dash mat and not worry about it.
in my 82, just a regular cab with a bench seat, i mounted a 6.5 in each door, two smaller maybe 5 or so inch speakers are hung under the middle of the dash looking up through the gapping hole, and there are 4 huge maybe 10 or 12 inch round speakers [out of 650 watt jvc home system that blewup] wire tied to the back of the seat, ive got a elcheapo sony explod head unit and a elcheapo sony explod 500 watt 4 channel amp im running 2 speakers off each channel.
i run it with the majority of the sound coming from the 4 behind the seat theres a differnt speaker for each channel so front and rear comes from behind, the speakers are suspended behind the seat facing forward so the seat material deadeds the sound, it sounds pretty good.
The hole in the dash was empty when I got it.
it had two 6.5's in the doors.
I put a pair of 4 in. Pioneer 2 ways in the hole. (Some cutting required )
Pioneer 6.5's in the doors, and built a box to go behind the seat with a pair of Pioneer 6x9's an a 12 in. Memphis sub hooked up to a Swiss Audio 400 watt amp.
My friend's that work at Auto Radio say that it is competition quality.
And speakers playing behind you generally make the sound stage mushy. Unless they are bass only speakers. Put a good componet set or Co-Axil in the doors and a sub behind you and ditch the center speaker.
