I've been considering stereo/speaker configurations for a while. I'm trying to avoid cutting holes in the doors or cluttering the floor space with boxes.
Recently, I found a stereo speaker that purports to replace the original speaker. I'm assuming that you have to remove the dash pad to uninstall/install the speaker(s). Is that so?
If so, how involved is the removal of the pad? There doesn't appear to be any way to remove the old speaker from below. Any thoughts or cautionary remarks?
Dash pad removal is a hand scratcher. You have a series of nuts to remove under the windshield/against the firewall and some nuts in each corner and a couple towards the part of the dashpad facing the driver/passenger.
However, the speaker would have to be removed from underneath. The dashpad simply covers a metal dashboard.
I got my speaker out by removing the radio and the glove box. I recall having to disconnect one of the vent tubes for the defrost too.
An excellent opportunity to clean up what's in the glove box. I agree, a hand scratcher so don't be afraid to wear a good fitting set of mechanics gloves.
Speaker removal is easy.....pull the radio....look thru the hole where the radio was and you will see the bracket that holds the speaker in. That bracet has a screw in the front that attaches the bracket to the dash. Remove that screw, lower the bracket in the front and push up in the back by the firewall and the bracket and speaker will release from the indents in the firewall. Unplug the speaker and you are done.

Very good answer, Dash pad removal not necessary. If it is unmolested, if it is, then all bets are off.
