I have a 1979 f150 ranger lariat. I've only owned a short time, so I keep finding questions to ask. I took the door panels off and thereally is a speaker in each door. There's a 8 inch speaker wire hanging in door cut off smooth. There is no hole in front of door. Would this truck came from factory with speakers not hooked up? There is no speaker under dash, however there are 2 speakers mounted behind the seat into the wall of cab, flush mounted. Are these factory? It has an aftermarket Alpine stereo. Looking to replace with 79 original am/fm.
I've taken apart several 78/79's and I've never seen a set of factory door speakers until Friday when I saw a pair in a high end (Lariat or Ranger can't remember) cab I pulled door panels off of. Most trucks the screw holes have never had anything in them. You can verify they are factory as they have a Ford # on the back.
It's unlikely they were installed but not hooked up (but I can't rule it out).
I've never seen anything factory looking behind the seat but there were all kinds of dealer installed accessories that go in with factory fit and finish.
I'm curious as to how they install flush behind the seat though. The rear can wall isn't thick enough! They would stick out the back.

Door speaker
End of wire. Its a lot more than 8 inches
I answered my own question, the speakers are not factory.
But they are mounted in the wall of the cab behind the seat. Not the back of cab but in the side of cab.
Double check that... If really aren't any, could possibly be aftermarket doors? No idea who would put speakers in doors without holes in em though.
Lol my PO did, and just ran the wire between the door panel and door and then electrical taped heavily at the gap between door and cab. Pretty sure my speakers had ford stamped on them, looked to be real old but not sure if factory because I don't have any holes in my doors either
The guy I got my cab off of has the doors from it... Now that I think about it, it had factory door speakers but we didn't disconnect any wires when we pulled the doors... Didn't think about that until just now. Hmm.
The factory door came with holes to mount 5 1/4" speakers but there were no holes in the door for speaker wiring. Those were put in at the dealer level. Their location is high on the door itself roughly at the bottom of the vent window level, and at a corresponding spot on the door jamb. Both are marked by a dimple in the sheet metal (which comes in real handy as it is a bugger to drill them without the dimples.) On a good day a dealer tech could install the radio, drill the antenna hole in the fender, install the speakers, and run wiring in under an hour and I believe it paid 2 flat rate. There were a variety of factory radios but as I recall all the speakers were the same. Any thing more than that (such as your rear cab mounts) are aftermarket. (The real fun were the early '60s models which had a massive removable access plate in the bottom of the door panel - you could literally mount almost anything, even the state-of-the art 6x9 coaxes there for about as good of sound as you could get in mid '70s stereo.)
Interesting... I have read that before but at that point 5 1/4" and 6x9" were about the only common aftermarket speaker sizes and I installed a bunch. My 78 has 5 1/4" too, I tried a 6.5 and the metal frame would not fit in flush.
