I've been reading the messages posted here and discovered that the only people that know anything about our GEMS are those of us that own one. I've been trying to find shocks for the front of my '64 F100 2 wheel drive, but none of the local parts suppliers have a listing for my truck (probably because the shocks are studs on both ends). Can anyone help me by giving me a brand name and/or part number for a 64??
Also, for best ride control, due to the straight axle, should I be using heavy or light duty??
Any info would be great......keep the Ford spirit alive guys!!!
This is my first post here, I just found this site not too long ago. I can't believe I missed this for so long -- I have a 64 too and shocks are a bit hard to find. I'm sure there are others, but I found a set of Monroe through Macs Auto Parts that worked fine.
Remember that unless you install them yourself you'll have to clear it with your mechanic -- a lot of places won't install parts you don't actually purchase from them. I did a lot of business with Sears over the years and they really torqued me off when they wouldn't install my new shocks for me. Haven't done any business with them since that time. Oh Well.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-Apr-02 AT 01:17 PM (EST)]I have Rancho RS5000's on the front of mine. The part # on them is 504. The back are just plain Rancho's.
I checked their web site but their catalogue doesn't go back any further than 1970. So I called their 1-800 number but he said their part #'s are all 4 digits. Could you have maybe missed a digit?
All I could see on the shock was 50_4. There was a space in it which made me look harder. I'll chip the paint off later tonight to see what else is hiding under it.
Macs has one set listed for front
CITZ-18124-MLE PAIR 45.75 MONROE LIMITED EDITION F100 & F250 61 TO 64
Rear they have 2 sets
A9A-18125C each 25.95 CURE-RIDE F100 & F 250 61 TO 64
and
A9A-18125M each 19.95 MONRO-MATIC PLUS F100 & F250 61 TO 64.
I installed the front and the less expensive rear shocks on my 63 F100. It was easy. Took only one wrench as I recall maybe two. Made a difference in the trucks handling and ride. Before replacing the shocks you would about bounce to the ceiling when going over bumps and the truck would dive to one side when braking. After all around shocks and brake pads these problems went away. Still is a old truck with armstrong power steering and foot strong power brakes but is better.

Im going to my parts store this morning. I'll give him those part numbers ( both the Gabriel & Monroe). I hope I still get those numbers to work for me. My luck, they will be discontinued. If they are, I might not have a choice but to order from Macs. The problem with that is that I'm in Canada, by the time I get them shipped to me and pay the tax and duty, I probably could have hand-crafted my own!!
I'll let you know how I make out.....thanks again!
I know Vintage Ford Parts in CA, Autozone, Napa, Dennis Carpenter, LMC, and Mac's all carry a line of shocks to fit but why be normal. Most people are surprised when they see the Rancho's under my truck. Besides I like the way they look and handle. I had a set of shocks from Vintage Ford for my 60 F-100 Stepside back in the early 90's before the Exwife (&itch) sold it on me for $200.00 Back then the truck handled ok. I love the way these Rancho's make my truck handle now.
I'm in AZ, and Autozone has them in normal stock. LMC has them. In my opinion, Ranchos are crap and WAAAAAY overpriced. You're paying for the red boot. They're not gas charged, they're just open staged valving. Where are you located?
You talking to me Chicken? LOL Sounds funny. But if you are I am in New Orleans. My truck came with the Rancho's on there. I have been happy with them so far. The roads in New Orleans are like bad dirt roads from back from where I grew up. They will certinly chew up your suspension and rims if you don't watch where you are driving. New orleans has a really great claim system. They figure why pave the raods when it is cheaper to pay for your new parts on your car or truck. It's BS to me but most down here like the idea of it.
Airharley, yeah the roads here in AZ suck too. What's worse is in winter they use cinders on the road, which is great for ice, but they don't sweep them up afterwards. Every truck I've owned has had a broken windshield since I've lived here. As for Ranchos, if they came with them, use 'em until they're dead. It's just Ranchos are much better for off-road use, where you don't want a gas-charged shock.
