I've been looking in several locations to purchase gas shocks for the truck. I can't seem to find anyone who list these shocks prior to 1961 f100's? I'm planning on lowering the truck two inches so may need special size shocks also. Can anyone tell me the part # on their shocks and or what shock they used? The rear has the round eye hole on the bottom and the pin type on top. The front shocks I believe are #5751 for Monroe shocks. Any help would be appreciated. Any info on where to buy these shocks at a reasonable price would be nice too! Thanks guys!
Vintage Ford has the shocks, however they don't provide part #'s and only carry the oil filled shocks, not gas shocks. Not only that, but they charge double and triple for what you can get shocks at an Auto Parts for. Vintage Ford is good for obsolete parts or hard to find items. Save yourself money and get shocks (better shocks) from an auto parts store. I'm surprised no one has changed their shocks and have a part# or where they purchased the shocks. Must be harder to find then I thought. I check with the swap meets.
As per the Monroe website: 32126 High quality economy replacement
As per the Gabriel website: 81416 Guardian series
Just a couple of part#'s from some bigger companies. I'm sure they could be cross referenced by other manufacturers to find their equivilent, or cross referenced by Autozone, Napa etc... Keep in mind these come up on their websites for STOCK applications. Not sure about applications for lowered vehicles.
See if this link works, I posted the numbers I had come up with searching only for rear shocks but this link doesn't differentiate between front and rear.
56 toy, Thanks for the info. Actually, I found this website a while back. I went to Kragen auto parts (local parts house here) gave them the numbers. The gas shock was $149.00 EACH! The standard oil filled were $29.99 for the rears but are no way comparable to gas filled shocks. I know there are shocks out there that fit and cost a fraction of that. I can get KYB for about $80 a pair however no one has the part #. It seems like a mystery LOL LOL..... As for the fronts, I found out they are #5851 for monroe's. Keep the info coming. We'll found out a hot deal soon.
I am always lowering something it seems and I find myself perusing the maremont or gabriel shock book at Kragen/shucks/Checker Auto parts stores. Just measure your ride height from stud to stud and that is the length at mid-stroke of the shock. CarQuest also has these old style books behind the counters. Just ask to look thru them while they answer the phones . All these books go way back to the 50s' and have info on mounts ( top and bottom) stroke, extended length, collapsed length and the picture or drawings to each plus crossover numbers to major mfrs. I pay 15.00 for OEM. 25/30.00 for better, and 45-60.00 for gas. PS: same goes for any old parts ( ie: heat motors, switches, relays, bearings, heat control valves.radiators)
Good luck to you.
56 toy, hey great find on ebay. However, I went there to check the shock. I believe those are the plain oil filled and not gas shocks. The price is good, but they get you on shipping. The shipping for me was $15.00. Have to think about it. Thanks for the info buddy.
