86 F150 C6?

86 F150 C6?
My dad has a 86 F150 with the 5.0L/auto. I'm assuming the automatic is a C6? What type of fluid does this tranny take? I've always assumed Type F until I read through some posts on here saying Mercon instead. The family has had this truck since 94 and we've never changed it, only put 40-50k on it though. The fluid is still a reddish color though. The problem it's having is similar to slipping when trying to pull something heavy, the transmission maybe shot. The plan is to drop the pan change the filter and replace whatever is lost. I don't know if the c6 has a drain plug but if it does I will change it every couple months till it looks good.
