changing all the transmission fluid

I was going to change all the trans fluid in my 86,I was going to take off the pan change the filter and drain the torque converter, I was wondering when I refill it, can I dump all the oil back in all at once or do I have to start it up and fill the torque converter half way through filling it? does anyone know how many litres the C6 take for a complete change and what kind of transmission fluid it takes type F? or atf, or a dexronII orIII?

Here is a real simple flush procedure. Remove the pan and change the filter. Clean out the pan and replace it using a new gasket. Then take loose the return hose from the cooler and direct it into a bucket. add four quarts of trans fluid to the tranny. Start the engine and let it idle untill the fluid starts pumping out into the bucket. Then shut it off and add four more quarts. Start it again and then observe the oil stream into the bucket. After four or five quarts have run out again shut it off and add four quarts fresh. You repeat this until your happy with the color of the oil running out into the bucket. ( should be a bright clear red) then you reconnect the cooler hose and top off the trans normally.
This will flush out the cooler as well and the only old oil remaining in the system will be in the return line to the trans from the cooler. Normally takes about 16 quarts to completly flush. (oil is cheap and trannys are generally not)
Don't know which is the return line? Before you begin start the engine and put it in drive. Step hard on the brake and rev the engine to at least 1500 RPM. Dont spin the tires but just stall the convertor for about 20 to 30 second and no more. Then shut off the engine and check the cooler lines by the radiator. The hot one is the discharge line from the converter, the cooler of the two line is the return to sump line.
I did this twice a year on my snowplow truck and every 30,000 on My F150.

Dexron III seems to be the fits all trans oil and will work fine in your 86.

try it

thanks, but just so I got it right, I want to disconnect the cool line the one returning to the sump(pan)? correct, I've never tried that method before, but I did here a tranny shop guy saying its basicly the same as a tranny flush at a quick lupe that would cost you 130$

Yep the cool line is the return to sump from the cooler. And the hose in the bucket should come from the cooler side of where you disconnect it. Your pretty much going to be pumping the oil out of the trans with the front pump and not letting it return. That will completly clean out the trans. Most of your time will be spent removing and replacing the pan.

take care

And after you do this go buy a new torque converter! 20 to 30 seconds of this will MELT things in the torque converter! If you MUST do this, NEVER go more than 10 seconds, and preferably 5. Then idle in park or neutral to pump the VERY hot oil out of the torque converter to the cooler. That will get the cooler lines good and hot, and you'll be able to tell that the front one goes to the cooler and the rear returns from the cooler.

Go to the Tech Articles here on FTE. There is a very good article under transmissions that tells you how to change the fluid for an E4OD. It should be almost identical on your transmission.

If I just drain the pan and torque converter, what is the fluid replacement procedure, do I put 4 quarts in at a time? run it for a few seconds, shut it off then add 4 more, or can I dump the same amount that came out of the pan and torque back in all at once then start the motor and run it.

You can't put all the fluid that came out of the torque converter and pan into the pan at once. It will come out of the vent on top of the trans.

Put about two quarts more in than came out of the pan and run for 15-30 seconds. Then put most of the rest in, minus a quart. Warm it up and use the last quart to get the level just right.
