A typical C6 transmission will take 24 pints of fluid for a totally dry transmission, not counting the fluid for the cooler and lines, which may add another 4-5 pints or so.
There was a fluid changover in the mid 80's, but the newer transmissions use Dextron/Mercron. Dextron III will work fine. It should be printed on the dip-stick for your vehicle which fluid to use. Mine is an 86, and it uses Dextron fluid.
