Does anyone know how to remove the plastic ***** such as on windshield wiper switch? I'm guessing there's a tool, but have resorted to bolts cutters and wired a new temporary switch until I order one from LMC.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-May-02 AT 09:14 PM (EST)]Hey, there's a little trick! This applies to the dash control *****, not the radio or headlight. Each **** is held in by a spring friction clip. Under each **** is a little indent. Insert a pointed object, like a nail, and slide it into the indent. This will push the spring clip in, towards the front of the ****, and allow you to pull the **** off. (Keep pushing on the indent until it comes off, though.)
Headlight switches are different. Now this what I'm about to tell you is good back to at least '64, according to my knowledge, but it may be different for '63 and earlier; I just don't know about the earlier ones. I doubt it has changed, though. Anyway, the **** is permanently attached to the shaft. You must remove the **** and shaft together by pressing on a spring loaded button or detent on the switch. This detent is just inside the dash. That is, it is located close to where the switch mounts to the body. It is located on the top of the switch, where the bottom of the switch is the connection for the wiring harness. You will probably find it much easier to remove the instrument panel to see it.
Hope this helps!
Chickenmanq! Geeze "bolt cutters", When I get that pissed I go for another brewski. John gives good advice! I would add hammer the nail flat and file it smooth to make a narrow flat blade. Slip this tool/blade along the top of the switch shaft, into the indentation of the **** and gently slide the **** off. Try this on the one you removed with bolt cutters and see how it comes off. Others un screw and like John said the headlight **** is special. I saw in the junk yard where someone had taken an axe to the dash of a 72 to get the heater out.... Chickenmanq, you don't own an axe do you?

Well, no, no axe, but I do own a machete, a framing hammer, and a blowtorch. Usually I don't resort to such madness, but I had already determined the switch was bad, and since I was replacing it with a temporary switch anyway, out came the bolt cutters. Actually, it's more a lock cutter. Cheap version but has removed many locks. Sucks I gotta replace the headlight switch and ignition. Oh well. They're kinda expensive. And why the hell did Ford put the fuse box into the headlight switch? What kind of retarted reasoning is that? I'm done venting. Have to go study for Com 400 final. Summer session blows.
