Horn brushes question

Underside of steering wheel horn brush wasn’t making contact with wheel. Is it supposed to? I just put in new TSS and brushes and when I put steering wheel on, it’s not making contact. Am I missing a part? I scuffed up what I think is where brush is supposed to make permanent contact.

Yes it is supposed to make contact. Is the gap between your steering wheel and column too large? If yes, you can adjust the steering column by loosening the clamp on the underside and pulling it up towards the wheel. You need to remove the stiff spring between the wheel and column when you make the adjustment, then re-install it once the gap is set properly.

What clamp, the one that holds the column to the dash?

Yes. You can slide the column up after you loosen it, then tighten it back down once it is in the proper position.

This isn’t working. The “collar” that holds the TSS needs to move forward. I try moving it forward but it doesn’t stay put. Is there something wrong with the collar?

Your going to need to loosen the clamp on the firewall and the one under the dash to move the column, that is if it what has moved down. The other is if the shaft has moved up. You can tell that if the rag joint has separation.
2nd pic is what it should look like.

Looks like something moved and has the rag joint looking not so good. What kind of gap do you have between the column and steering wheel?

When you put the new rag joint in the column and shaft will need to be adjusted. Do you have a shop manual?

I would start spraying so PB Blaster now. Another thing that might happen when you loosen the lower shaft bearing collar the bearing might just fall apart and need to be replaced. The goal when putting it all together is to have the rag joint not to be stressed up or down and the steering wheel to column gap under an 1/8" with all bolts torqued down.

You know, I was just thinking about spraying it down now. Thanks for the info. Really coming in clutch.
