Question: I been working on getting my carb and timing set, in the midst of getting it together... I thought I drained my battery but it's either my starter or my solenoid.
My lights come on full power when i try to jump it, it makes no difference... when i tapp the solenoid a little the starter will turn but slow(drag for a second) then nothing,,, it starts to smoke slightly....
The starter has been rebuilt and probably has been driven maybe 5 miles...
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 23-Jul-02 AT 07:59 PM (EST)]Rebuilt doesn't always mean anything. It sounds like you have a bad starter. I am assuming you mean the starter is smoking.
Other than that, check the following:
1. Your battery cables from the solenoid to the starter and from the solenoid to the battery.
2. That the starter is properly mounted, and not in there ****-eyed.
I think its a bad starter. Smoking means it is getting current, but it is burning up inside.
One other possiblity is the motor locked up? Try turning it by hand just to see; the parts store will be more convinced its the starter if you make that check.
Hope you find its an easy answer!
Let us know, OK?
Ray, Replace the starter solenoid, solenoid to starter cable, Battery cable and battery to engine ground cable. You can buy all this stuff for a few dollars, represent good value for the investment and installation is a breeze. New cables and solenoid are a low cost way to eliminate a pile of headaches later on. I replace batteries at the three year mark and use the biggest battery that will fit in the holder. Then install a (Known good) battery. Try to start. If the starter is smoking, take it back to the Guy that rebuilt it and have him check it out. Have you got Pertronix yet? Flat cap, fat wires and platinum plugs?

Ray, Try another starter first. I usually us a reman with lifetime warranty. Rebuilts are not worth the time, and I can't remember when I changed a solenoid. I think I would skip the platinums too. I have sussessfully used Autolite 45 for a while, save that money for gas.
