K&N Filter
Discussion is fine, and answering questions is also fine, but in my humble opinion, arguing over whether or not a K&N is worth having is rediculous. It would be fine if it remained as a factual or PRODUCT opinionated discussion, but it never does. It always turns into a PERSONAL opinion matter. Who's stupid? Who's assanine? You see what I'm talking about?
We are very lucky in that we live in a country where we have choices and are entitled to our opinion's and the ability to voice them but when is enough, enough???? At what point is it just ranting and the male homosapien's need to "one up" the next guy?
Your point is well taken, but, I like these discussions (you say arguments) because they are entertaining and educational. However, you do make an excellent point. Why does it almost always come down to getting personal? That part always baffles me.
Maybe aging (like I am now) has its benefits. I can be calmer in the fires of controversy. Especially when it ain't more than a dumb piece o' steel. (Yes, I said ain't for a reason)
Oops! Metalman I just realized that (dumb piece o' steel could have been interpreted as a pun/slam against you. It wasn't, I assure you. (You see, that's where we are these days!)

My '74 highboy had a 12" high birthday cake K&N on top of the Holley 750.
My '96 t-bird got a K&N panel filter because the air box is too small. It's been moved to my '97 Cougar.
My '01 V10 has a Fram Air Hog on it now - don't shoot me, it's the same basic thing as a K&N, and the parts store didn't have a paper filter in stock for it.
The '96 t-bird and '97 cougar 4.6L's actually respond to the K&N because the stock air box is so small, it's sized for a NA 3.8L. It's been well-known in MN12 circles that a K&N will help. Maybe a small amount, but it is noticable.
The '01 V10 responded to the filter change, but only because the stock paper filter was clogged enough for me to notice it. Now I won't have to change it as often and when I do, I can just clean it and put it back. For the price, it was worth it, because I change paper filters probably every 10K miles or even less. So it's going to pay for itself.
None of my vehicles has any dust or dirt after the filter.
Which leads us back to whether or not it's a waste of money. The fact that you never have to buy another filter, it's not a waste of money. Whether or not in a V10-sized airbox it's a waste in terms of performance, well, yeah...
Thank you for understanding my point. I wasn't trying to come off as a fear monger nor a limp wristed, spineless, jellyfish either. I like a good argument as much as the next guy. Your right, they are entertaining. And you know, a little good natured ribbing is fine, but it goes beyond that time after time. As much as we all post comment's, opinion's, information, etc, we don't really know each other. And without seeing more than the words on the screen, sometimes individuals don't know whether people are joking or slamming them. So then we get hot under the collar and start insulting rather than arguing. I'll get off my soapbox now. Sorry guys....
Dave
P.S. I just pulled the K&N that the original owner used, out of my truck and replaced it w/ my good old fashioned WIX paper filter. Sorry, I had to do this!!

Rich
Dang, does that mean the 10 filters I got down at the "Big Lots" for $2.79 each are just crap? They have a nice yellow color paper and say made in Xingchen China.... hummmm
That xingchen China paper disintagrates ! He!He!
Don't use unless the engine is made in china!!!!!!!!!!!
Rich
Or whatever it was they said on the old Kung Fu show!!!!!
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts

Oh, now you did it Rich, I "wasted my money" ...
I'll get you one of these days....
Like the Pink Floyd song: "One of these days, I'm going to CUT you into little PIECES".
Oh wait, that's what I'm going to do to all the MOTORCRAFT, OEM FORD rubber hoses, auto locking hubs, 4.6L intake manifolds, solenoids, TPS's, serpentine belts, and all the other crud I've replaced on Fords over the years, including the last three NEW vehicles I bought. If an OEM part failed, why would I go out and buy the exact same part?
I wonder, when my V10's stock serpentine belt squeeled like a pig on the 1st-to-2nd upshift, and I replaced it with a Dayco belt and it hasn't done it in 4 years, if a Motorcraft belt would have been better? Would it? Well, WOULD IT?
I wonder if my master cylinder cruise-control-cutoff switch is a Motorcraft part? I wonder if I bought a Motorcraft switch if it would be any different than the OEM part installed from the factory? Oh, that's right, I have to take my SD in for a recall to put a fused wiring harness in. Don't fix the freakin' switch that supposedly "meets OEM specs" just like Motorcraft parts, just put in a fuse so the truck doesn't burn to the ground. Better than driving it into the back of a mini-van filled with kids after the freakin' switch leaks all the brake fluid onto the ground.
But I guess the liability for the switch is someone else's problem, not Ford's. Ford's only liability lies in running +12 hot to it at all times with a 20 amp fuse, that carrys more current than the switch is capable of.
Can you tell I just spent 2 hours fixing a check-engine light on my '96 t-bird (now my sister's car) for a P1443 Evap Control code? Guess what it was? A 3/8" to 1/4" rubber hose, about 1.5" long, holding the Evap purge solenoid to the canister. Well, the solenoid was no longer near the canister, I can tell you that. I wonder if Motorcraft (oh, wait, that's Ford) would sell me the same crap rubber?
All in jest, my friends, all in jest. I bleed blue. All my above gripes are echos of what I've heard from others, and this was all just a joke. But somehow, quite relevant.

Remember..."your equipment is made by the lowest bidder". Now what movie was that from??

Have a great day!

Then after much B/S "OK, gotta say it here, because you're doing this publicly.
If you have nothing more to lend to this thread, STOP NOW.
Anything further from you in this thread that is not factual about K&N will be removed."

Art K is doing a thankless job and to tell the truth he lets a lot more crap go by then I would... and that is why I am not a MODERATOR
