I am about to buy a Viair 450 c air compressor and want to mount it on my '06 250 diesel. Well those of you with diesels know there isn't much space left under the hood. So where do I mount this thing and do I just wire it to the 30 amp up-fitter switch? Advice much appreciated
I have a 450C as well
I am thinking of mounting it under the truck, along a frame rail or in a toolbox.
Keep me up to date and post all pics, I will do the same
On my V10 I am barely able to put my ARB compressor under the hood.
Most folks that run a compressor and tank as large as most of the VIAIR setups put them in a tool box in the bed or under the rear seat in the cab.
As far as the wiring, it should come with all the necessary wiring. I've never been a big fan of tapping into the factory wiring on items that can be high draw or high current. I have a whole seperate power block that I have the accessories (minus the winch) hooked up to on a 100 amp fuse. Then all of them have their seperate fuses.
Just go to radio shack, best buy, circuit city, etc and pick up an amplifier power kit and it'll come with all the items I was mentioning. Thn you can add a power block that has as many outlets as you need.
I've got my compressor mounted inside a slightly modified battery box on the passenger side frame rail right below the front door. The tank is mounted passenger side under the bed. And I have it wired through a relay direct to one of the batteries. I don't have upfitter switches (maybe some day) but I did install some really nice rocker switches from a Western Star for the compressor and horn. I just got pics of it and am going to try to set up a gallery... finally.

on edit... I just finished setting up my gallery, so you can see pics there.

Reason: gallery pics added
The other power wires that you see on the battery are the power for the front and rear winch.
The only things I want to add is a solenoid that I can control in the cab and shut down all power, if needed. Basically a big kill switch. And also a second battery (Optima Yellow Top) that I'll run just the winch from.
I have a pressure switch on mine, but I also have the on/off switch on the dash.
BFR, where did you get your switches? Do you have the plugs to plug into the back? So you can unplug your switch without doing each wire individually? I have the same switches which I got from work, but the only plugs we have are attached to the wiring harnesses already which are all built in Mexico or someplace.

I mounted my compressor on the right frame rail, under the bed, right behind the cab. I had the machine shop cut and bend a piece of 1/4 steel plate to bolt to the frame for the compressor to sit on. I did NOT need to drill any additional holes in the frame to do the install. There is a few pictures HERE. Since the photos were taken, I've covered the compressor with a modified battery box, and relocated the air intake filter.

Mine all came with the ARB's. The wires plug in individually. Anything that comes with a proprietary harness..........GETS CUT. I hate having to get some special friggin part for a simple task (i.e. a relay). I can't stand when a relay goes or a fuse blows and you have to buy thier stuff. I just cut it and wire it up with common pats.
