Mysterious horn tooting

My 92 Aerostar has a horn that is possessed. It toots randomly when the vehicle is parked in the driveway. Sometimes a little blip, sometimes a medium toot, and sometimes a bona fide honk. Random times between the noises, usually between 10 and 25 minutes. Neverr before 10 PM, and never during the daytime. No alarm system, no other horn troubles. I am out of ideas, having tried everything but wire cutters. Anybody else have one?

Try removing the horn pad. Should be two screws on the forward side of the wheel, pull the horn pad off and remove the two wires off the wheel. If no honking, the problem is in the horn pad.

No horn pad, but two little buttons on the steering wheel. I checked them, buttons, clockspring, and cruise functions are all OK.

One of my neighbors suggested that this seemed to be a problem only after my wife drove the van, and oddly enough, he is right. If my daughter or I drive it, it doesn't toot at night; if she drives, there is tooting.

I'm not going to answer that. I don't want to be turned into a toad again. <grin>

I'm having the exact same symptoms on my 2000 F250. Woke me up at 1AM the other night. I pulled the battery so I could get some sleep. I'll keep posting with things that I try and if they help or not.

Good luck

If your wiring harness has any multi pin connectors that carry the circuit for the horn,
you might check them for corrosion between other current carrying lines and your
horn line. Sometimes a corrosion bridge causes spurious circuits like that. They can
also ocour in bundled wires with damaged insulation.

I have been through the circuit from horn buttons to battery to horns, and all connectors in between, and still can't find anything. Will have to let my wife drive it tomorrow to see if I fixed it without knowing it or it still toots randomly.

Does your wife move the tilt wheel to a different position everytime she drives? If so, maybe there is a wire rubbing in the column somewhere.

We've narrowed it down to Mom doesn't apply the parking brake in the driveway while daughter and I do. I hope that is related to the reason it toots for wife and not for us. I drove it today and did not apply the parking brake. So far, all quiet in the driveway.

I'm going to guess the issue was related to a short or faulty switch in the parking brake. I noticed that pulling up the parking brake did not cause the red warning light to come on, and when I wiggled the switch, the horn tooted. I replaced the switch and there has been no further tooting. Talk about something I would have never thought of on my own. It's never easy at this address. Thanks!
