Question horn trouble

It must be a generic aftermarket horn cuz there are no markings on it but all who see it agree that its vintage and 6V at least. I cleaned it up & repainted it and got it to toot pretty good but when ever I stick it in the truck, (38 1/2 ton), some thing goes wrong. First time one of the new wires melted(16G. too light). Next time, with 14G. wire, it caused a worn solenoid wire to overheat. When I switched wires on the 2 posts, the horn would always toot!! So I replaced the worn out soleniod wire with new 10G. & it seemed to be fine for awhile. The truck sat all week and went to start it Sat. and the battery was too far down to turn it over fast enuf to start. Anyway, is all this related to the horn, am I missing something in hooking it up? The orignal horn buzzes and also has 2 wires but it can't get loud enuf to be heard in traffic. When the old horn is hooked up, everything else seems to work fine. Any help would be fine!!! Tks~JH

I've taken old horns apart in my youth... You might take the cover off of yours and see if the contacts are welded together, or, you might find that it needs to be rewound. Try cleaning the contact first. You will see it when you get the cover off. Dont bend anything.

Best of luck! I love old vehicles!

How do you have the horn hooked up exactly? Do you have a horn relay? The solenoid you are talking about. Is that the starter solenoid(relay)?
