I have a 1968 f100 360cid, 2 bbl. I want to get new headers, mine are all rusty and i think there cracked. I dont want to spend that much on them but i want some HP increase and a better exhuast sound out of them. Probably just like 200$ or less i guess, thanks... and if u could tell me a good place to get em.. :-staun :-staun :-staun :-staun :-staun :-staun :-staun :-staun :-bang
how much improvement in performance will headers provide over the stock exhaust manifold? Mine is a 69 390 w/2 barrel... Also, anyone sell any nice dual exhaust systems? My local muffler shop can bend some pipes and help me get rid of my ugly rusted exhaust... Now I'm thinking I should maybe do headers? Again, there's a lot of nice exhaust systems being made for cars now - how about F100's? Thanks!
I just put the Dynomax headers on my 1974 F-100 360. They're great, but there seems to be some interference between the pipe and the tranny pan (they rub together). It may just be due to how the pipes were installed (that was done at a muffler shop), or it could be worn motor mounts (though with 28,000 miles, they shouldn't be too bad). The Dynomax instructions suggest replacing them while you're down there. I may replace them and see if that helps with the interference.
The Passenger side manifold was pretty easy to remove. Sometime during its life it had been removed, as it had a new gasket on it. The top bolts on the driver side manifold would not budge, so I just took it to the shop and let them do it (after damaging myself on the power steering pump filler) along with the headers.
I think next time I'll spend the money on the Thorsen headers. I have to jerry-rig a heat stove for the air intake and the electric choke. Apparently they have these items and they either come with the headers or they can be bought seperately (I wasn't quite sure which).
I have inexpensive Blackjack headers on my 69 F100 428. They fit perfectly, no problems. I ran 2 1/2 pipe and had it exit in front of the rear wheels; at a 45 degree angle. This will really flow like this and you have no problems with the dual pipes interfering with your spare tire.
There's no way I would ever screw with headers
again. The biggest improvement I ever made on my
'73 390 4 speed was to get rid of the headers and
go back to a set of manifolds with welded dual
exhaust. All I did for the 2 years I had those
headers was fight them. In order to get them in
I had to remove the frame towers, and I constantly
had starter problems, and could never keep them
from leaking. When it came time to remove them,
I did so with a cutting torch. That was the end of
the starter problem, and if I did have to drop the
starter, it was back to a 15 min job as opposed to
about 4 hrs with those !@#$@#$% headers. Just my

Trail rider, what brand of headers did you have that you were so unhappy with ? I think headers are a must on an FE, cause the factory exhaust manifolds are SO bad. But it seems that some headers for FE powered trucks are wonderful and some are less than wonderful. I don't think less than 200$ is going to buy a nice set. John has Hookers and he doesn't seem to like them. Proeliator has Stans and loves them. BBB has Sandersons and seems very pleased. Stans are tri-Ys and Sandersons are shortys. Getting a well made pair seems to be key to a good fit.
CRJ, are you looking for headers for a 2 or a 4 wheeler ? DF
I put Hedman headerson my 390 to replace some cheap foreign jobs that leaked to no end. They cost $160 for the pair and have not leaked or needed re-torquing since last April. They were a bitch to install, but well worth it so far. Free sticker too.
I can tell you that the Dynomax headers from Jegs.com are outstanding !!! when used with the Felpro exhaust gaskets. The gaskets that come with the headers will only last about 3-4 months.
The painted ones only cost about $70-$80. It is well worth the money for the coated ones. They are only $199 with a lifetime warrenty.
I have had them on my 74 f100 for about 2 years.
